Raleigh NC vs New Jersey

I am considering two jobs. One in Raleigh NC (98k). Another one is in New Jersey (110k). New Jersey is close to NYC, which is a vibrant city. But is the salary too low to live comfortably there?

How would the quality of life compare in the two places given the salaries above? Where would you have moved?

For reference, I am in my 20s. No kids.

I've lived in both places. If you're single, try Jersey. If you have a family, RTP is a better bet.

That part of NJ has a very low cost of living. You’d be living well at 75k there

It’s also a boring part of NJ unless you don’t mind the 1hr drive to Philly

Low cost of living relative to other parts of NJ anyway. I was in Jersey City, which might as well have been part of NYC. Rent was much much higher there then in Pennington, but I didn't need a car in Jersey City. I can't speak much for what QoL would be like in place like Pennington. Best suggestion I can make it's if you plan to travel into NYC often, try to live near to one of the regional rail stations if possible. Under no circumstances do you want to attempt to drive a car into NYC and try to park it.

If you’re young and single, don’t come to RTP. Please stay away

Raleigh is amazing for if you have a family. For single early 20s, ehhh there’s not too much to do compared to NYC. 98k in Raleigh is quite comfortable.

First of all NJ is a liberal shit hole. Sky high taxes, absurd sky high tolls and cost of living, very low end housing, tons of crime and the people are shit. Second no 110k is horrible for NJ even single to live on. Also while NJ is close to NYC its very very expensive to get into the city and back not to mention everything in the city is expensive.

Go for RTP you will have 110x higher quality of life and 98k goes alot farther than 110k in NJ.

Really depends on what OP is after. If they want to buy a house, settle down, and have their money go farther, RTP is fine. If they want to go out at 2 am and eat at virtually any type of restaurant imaginable and not have to worry about a car, well the NYC area is great for that. Or also maybe buying beer before 10am on Sunday. :D

No at 2am you can’t take Path to NYC. You can only Uber/lyft, and it will break your pocket.

NJ is a shithole place unless you live in a nice neighborhood which is 1.5 hours away and only for family.

I have literally taken PATH at 2am (home anyway). Maybe they've scaled back service in the last 8 years? Jersey City was fine enough, but I was on the water. The crappiness of Jersey City increases logarithmically based on the number of blocks away from the river you are.

Maybe there was only retuning train.
Anyway op said it’s Pennington NJ so we don’t need to talk about jersey city or NYC. That’s just middle of nowhere

    • NJ is so bad, everyone is leaving, yet the population density and income is some of highest in US. NJ is a great place compared to RTP.

Bruh Raleigh is in the middle of no where land. I’d take proximity to NYC any day. You’re close to Amtrak which unlocks a lot of travel

How is rent there? Could you give a breakdown of expenses?

Rent is $1000/mo for 1 bedroom unless you want to live further from work or downtown.

  • I went to college in NJ. Would not recommend it to a single intellectual. NYC or Philly had options for dating and social connections, but NJ was just sad. Dumb party bros who love football, mostly. Hoboken and Jersey City were awful. That being said, the NYC area culture is more shallow, arrogant, and aggressive than the West coast as a whole, so go there if that's your thing.
