I am a new grad. At one of the hackathon. I networked with one of the fb employees and got myself a referral . I got rejected even after referral. It so weird. I have been having a hard time getting calls for interviews from FAAN(-G). Its not that I am dumb. I have worked for close to 2 years including all my internships and my gpa is good(3.5). Can anyone refer me? I have a onsite with google plus I have been grinding Leetcode from 2 months. I am pretty sure I can crack an interview if I get. (Not so sure about google) is this because my university in florida and not the bay area?
1 referral just gives your more chance to pass resume screening 2 2 yoe is not much 3 GPA 3.5 is not very impressive 4 leetcode 2 months is not long enough. 5 fb is not for everyone None of the reasons quite justify the the result that you didn’t pass
If you have a 3.5 you're good to go. Nobody really cares about details above a 3.5.
0 months of leet code is long enough. Memorization isn't how you get past the interviews.
attend another set of hackathons and get more referrals? you got something worked and you just need to keep trying.
Not sure what college grads expect out of a referral - atleast in microsoft university hiring is central and they don’t care about referrals.
Is it a top1 program in Florida or like tier-3? 3.5 is average. Not everyone is cut for fang out of college.
University of Florida.
Remember when you ask for referral why should someone refer you just after a 5 min conversation ? Referrals make more sense when you know how that person has really worked , sadly the purpose of referrals is getting diluted .
I agree. but its a loop right then? How would a new grad get referrals otherwise. After your internship referrals are already exhausted/ you dont want to work where you interned.
You don't need referrals unless theres a real rec tbh.
What’s a top university in Florida?
I am not sure what you mean. But yes. UF comes in top 10 public universities overall.
Who cares? It’s still Florida
If you were trying to get into the NFL, going to school on Florida was a good choice. Not sure about actual jobs outside of Florida
At the end of the day, merits rules all. A referral is nice, but it’s not a magic bullet.
Thats the point. Not getting a chance to proof my merit.
Sometimes merit is introduced at the resume level. Referrals are often used as tie breakers
It's a little late at this point. Keep in mind that Google/Facebook literally have thousands of interns between the two of them. Most of the full time new grad openings get filled by December by intern conversions. So at this point there only a few openings remaining, if any.
I agree. I do have a backup offer from a company. I wish to work at the top companies. How did you get your linkedin call?
I did what everyone else who didn't go to a top CS school did and applied at a whole bunch of places. I interned at LinkedIn and got a full time offer.
A referral just helps get you in the door, not a guaranteed job. Since you're fresh out of college it does matter where you went but if you went to a pretty good school that's not University of Phoenix you should be alright. Good luck.
What's wrong with U of Phoenix?
It has a terrible reputation for poor education.
