I’m working in a remote engineering team and we are reporting to Seattle, and non of our customer are sitting in the same country with us. Obviously we have a significant disadvantage in terms of earn trust and relationship build. Also I feel the director level management not pay enough attention on us as they seldom visiting us and has little interaction with the team. Many of the team members quit due to the slow career path and the disconnection between management and the team. With the cost control, we might have even less opportunities on business trips which we could face to face communicate with management and our customer. Any advice that how we could influence remotely?
Your problems aren’t going to go away if you remain remote. Nor are you going to be effective in your attempt to be influential. People who are physically present to their managers will always take more priority. If you want better career progression and earn trust as you say, nothing builds more trust than being physically present and available. Either change jobs to one you can be physically available or move into Seattle. I realize moving may not be an option for many but your choices to spur career progression are also limited. It is a choice between being influential vs. working remotely. I don’t think you can get both.
