left amazon and now have to pay back around 9k in signing bonus and relocation. how exactly does that work considering the money to return is pretax money? bonus was paid post tax How would you file this on your taxes? If anyone has advice, it would be greatly appreciated. PS. Genuinely want to return money. Just need advice on how to go about this.
Not true. If they put 9k in w2 and when you pay back you can claim it in the next tax return.
I have been there. I had to pay back the required amount but was able to claim tax refund on the returned amount. Make sure to get a receipt of the refund transaction.
I've heard of plenty of people not repaying. Talk to HR. They'll get you to sign the papers saying you'll never say anything bad about Amazon in exchange. It's their dirty secret. Even if you don't repeat it, I know a guy they just sent random demand letters to but never sued him or anything. That was for $20k.
Wait a minute... you have to repay signing bonus? Wtf? Under what circumstances? Also is this Amazon-only thing?
You always have to pay back the sign on bonus, prorated, if you leave the company before a certain amount of time (usually a year). Let me know which company doesn’t have that requirement I’ll hop over for a day before moving on to my next job for some bonus cash...
This clause is def in your offer letter too microsoft.
You are an idiot
bad advice. this is a serious question.
