Accepted an offer at Amazon and about to start there end of April. I am putting in my resignation and taking a break before I start. I want to leave on good terms with the team, but don't really want to extend the notice period beyond the two weeks I am offering them. Looks like there is a chance I will get walked out when I tell them where I am going. Walkout may be the best way to exit as I don't have to deal with awkward interactions over the next two weeks. What is the best way to get the resignation process going ? Start with a mail ? 1:1 meeting ? Put it in the tool first and then send mail ? At what point in the process does one disclose where you are going to ? Put it in the resignation letter ? 4 YOE. L62. New TC 250K. L5. Would much appreciate responses from folks who have left Msft recently.
Generally you should ask your boss to chat in person, maybe go for a walk or find a conference room. Let them know you’ve accepted another offer and that this is your two week notice. They will ask you where you are going. Personally I don’t like to tell people where I am going in case they know someone at the other company and could potentially try to sabotage me. You can say amazon with the hope they will just walk you out. Be sure to have packed up the things you want to keep and take them to your car before you give notice. Congrats on the new job
Yep.. couldnt agree more. Especially with the part: “be sure to have packed up the things you want...” in addition make sure you save all the necessary docs beforehand.. espp pricing.. 401k info etc etc
Amazon is walkout
Going to google. Will resign soon.. Lets see what happens. I thought it varries between teams and your relationship with your manager.
Don’t forget to steal all the confidential source code and IP before you give notice since clearly you’re at risk of doing so afterwards… Stupid ass policy
Why tell them where you are going. Don’t just walk out and burn the bridge, dick move. Put in your two weeks.
The only way is a 1:1. If you've firmly decided on two weeks, that's up to you but that really is bare minimum and not ideal. 4 is better if you can swing it, because the best way is to offer to help train a replacement and with two weeks that's not an option. No matter what, if you're not walked out, work as hard if not harder than you ever have. Too many people check out after giving notice and that is the behavior everyone will remember.
Because you OWE your company. Right? Because they would never just let people go. Because they would always be your friend and be kind. They wouldn’t fire “at will” employees. You’re totally not just a number to the company. You owe the company nothing. Don’t be a dick but 2 weeks is enough
They walk you out as soon as you say where you’re going and they will push HARD to find out
1:1 with manager if you value that relationship. If you can do 2+ weeks, fine, you dont owe them anything more. It's unlikely they will have time to hire and place your replacement in weeks anyway. Personally I wouldn't tell anyone where I am going and you absolutely have zero obligation to do so. Up to you. They can find out on LinkedIn in a couple months like everyone else.
Tell your manager in a one on one first and explain where you are going then in put voluntary resignation tool
