After another year at IBM and nearing my retention payout I’m looking to update my resume and see what the market is like. I’m struggling a bit to keep my resume concise (1-page) and have meaningful descriptions covering all my experiences & projects. Wondering if anyone is willing to either share their resume OR just their description that I can use as inspiration. —— YOE: 5. (includes internship). I’ve moved around a few teams internally taking on different roles. TC: $110K - Toronto
Hey fellow IBMer! Don't worry about a page only, that's not the priority anymore. You'll want plenty of white space and break out big paragraphs so that whoever is reading it can be guided through the content easily. Two pages are very common these days, even 3 but 4 or more becomes risky. 5 YOE should be a 2-page resume most def. Everything else depends on where you want to go next.
Put the keywords, skills, and acronyms together in a summary section. Recruiters are not technical, and will pick out the resume when they see the keywords. In the Experience section, do not just describe the job function. Talk about what you actually did. Justify with numbers and impact. This will pique the hiring manager’s interest.
Another question ... I own a small business (I manage it but not work there). Would it make sense to list that on my tech resume to show management skills OR would it be seen as a “distraction”?
+1 to what big_fish said. getting the right keywords for the job you're applying to will be the most important part of your resume, or so I've found while looking for a job. Since I had free time, I've been building a personal tool to check which job keywords to put in my resume, so I can take out irrelevant ones and tailor the resume to each job I've been applying to. Lmk if that's something you'd be interested in, I can share the tool
I am 💯 interested in such a tool! Please share (DM or post here). Thanks!
Here’s my resume after an initial pass at updating it. Looking for feedback. I’m already planning on moving the franchise experience to a section of its own at the bottom (or maybe in the left panel). Appreciate your time. How about you share your resume and we critique shit out of it? Or you google for sample resumes
Thanks for the suggestion, I absolutely plan to do so shortly
