Significant comp bump, due to location. I'm not really interested in SRE long term but don't mind doing it for a year, to switch to SWE. Should I do it?
More TC, and G pays if you get paged as SRE.
Did you specifically interview for an SRE role? I haven’t heard of anyone interviewing for SWE and being offered an SRE instead.
You probably get paged less as SRE at G than as SDE at Amazon for most teams 😂
Not on my team - our on-call is mostly for fixing bugs and triaging tickets. I don't think anyone has ever been paged on my team for a real issue (ie. not for escalations of unaddressed minor tickets) That obviously makes the decision harder :)
Question for SREs: Does your job help you more in system design interviews? As an SWE, there’s a moderate chance you get put on a product/tools team or specialize in some small part of the stack. I’m currently SWE on product and I’m scared I won’t gain any experience on system design in the near future.
@Google, Yes. Keep in mind, Google invented SRE, and about half of SREs here are SWEs so it is not the typical SRE/Devops roles you see online.
Yes googles sre do a lot of coding afaik. My friend is an sre at G and loves it
Former Amazon - id move like my pants were on fire. Sre are worshipped at Google and Amazon hates it's employees.
How was the interview?
What is SRE? And how is it diff from sde?
