If someone was interviewing to be your Devops Engineer /SRE , what (kind of) questions would you ask ?
What sucked about the last CI/CD system they worked with and what they'd do to improve it. Basic python / ruby / go programming questions. What their favorite automation framework is and why. Hopefully some questions around puppet / chef or whatever you use in house, because they should either be comfortable with using it, or able to teach / implement it if hiring for a more senior SRE position. Ask them what the worst manual task was they ran into, and what they did to automate it.
Some question on detecting degradation on a service. It’s not up it’s not down it’s just not right.
pulling out three pieces of production logs, each containing thousands of lines and better have data mocked. Ask the interviewee to identify the bugs you prepared. If one can correlate all logs and get some reasonable solution within 45 minuets- strong hire. Get some clue- decent. Dread to death- no hire.
