Salary NYC Customer Engineer for Google Cloud Platform

Oct 14, 2018 34 Comments

After 7 interviews my recruiter told me they will be extending me an offer for a Customer Engineer (aka sales engineer) position at Google Cloud Platform.
The position is for NY offices.
I don’t have any competing offer, and recruiter has asked me what TC I am looking for.

She threw some number over the phone like:
Base salary: 135-142k
Target Bonus: 20%
GSU: she didn’t say how much but she said Google tends to be generous with shares
Signing Bonus: she didn’t give a number but asked me to think about it
Relocation: she mentioned it but didn’t say how much

I have 7+ years of experience, masters degree, multiple AWS certifications, and I am the founder and organizer of the Cloud meetup in the city I live.

Any idea on how much I should be asking for? I would expect to enter as T4 (is it the same than L4?) but she didn’t mention it (maybe I should ask her). Base salary sounds low compared to other posts I read.

Is 400k for GSU crazy? I was thinking on:
150k base salary + 360k GSU + 30k bonus
Thoughts?

Not sure whether OP will see this, but here's what he responded to me previously via DM:

      150/30/185 + 50 sign on bonus

Guys my friend moved from SE role to PTM (Partner role). He said his salary did not take a hit. Are the refreshers same in PTM role as SDE role?

I don't have any data points, but I'd be interested to hear what you get offered. I'm happy in my current position, but a Google recruiter reached out to me for the same role and I'm curious what sort of TC I'd be looking at if I made the switch.

Do you mean 400k over 4 years? High but not crazy

      Yes! Basically 100k per year

Do the numbers sound right? How much should I be getting a year for such position? (I’m currently way underpaid so whatever I get offered it will be more than what I make)

I'd be surprised if you got anything like that in GSU for CE. Expect it to be closer to your base.

So you suggest a good deal would be more like:
      140k base
      40k (160k/4)
      30k bonus

      ???

That's why the bonus is called a "target bonus". Essentially if you hit your targets, you get a 20% bonus on your base.

You might get 250. Ask for more on equity, other areas are basically pretty inflexible (base, bonus)

For L4 something around low 200's TC

    • OP
That’s what I’ve seen in other posts. Should I aim for 250 then?
Is that realistic for a Customer Engineer?
