Senior Swe at Microsoft to linkedin level

Level 63 at ms.. 8 years exp.. Based on levels.fyi I applied to a staff Swe position at LinkedIn.. Spoke to a recruiter who said it's up to me, but I may be more suited for a Senior SWE role.. She said staff Swe requires a lot of prior leadership experience including direct reports.. How accurate is that? I have some technical leadership experience and interns but nothing beyond that.. Has anyone interviewed for Staff Swe - what is it like? How is it different from Senior.. Is staff in linkedin like principal at Microsoft? Should i even consider senior Swe? On LinkedIn I saw senior Swe engineer profiles with as little as 2 years of total experience but also a few with 10 years.. How easy is it to get to Staff from Senior once I join?

2 yoe and a senior? 😑😑😑 it’s either fake or LI don’t know what they are doing

Microsoft hyTE58 OP Jun 15, 2019

Yep.. Seniors Swe at LinkedIn.. These were people that joined as fresh grads in 2016 /2017.. LI fresh grads join as Swe.. And the next level up is senior..

usual stuff recruiter lied to you staff doesn’t have reports at linkedin, it maps roughly to Senior at Microsoft staff at linkedin are like tech leads it seems that nowadays linkedin tries to downgrade people from MS heavily, i don’t know why they do this, maybe they know that our TC is shit and they can easily beat it even with the numbers from 1 level below

Microsoft hyTE58 OP Jun 15, 2019

Probably stupid of me to think the recruiter wouldn't lie.. She didn't say staff Swe in LI have reports.. But she said they expect candidates coming in to have managerial experience.. Which didn't make sense to me.. Have you interviewed there?

Microsoft xnxhfeet Jun 15, 2019

yeah, had the interview with them this year had the same issue as you, pinged my friend in LI who clarified this

Recruiters lie through their teeth to get you hired, their job is to low ball you. I feel that they are worse than Voldemort in Harry Potter

Staff is roughly equivalent to 64-65.

Microsoft flappybird Jun 15, 2019

Staff should be the minimum

LinkedIn TF. Jun 15, 2019

Staff is 64 atleast. Try for staff, to answer other questions, senior at 2 years is possible, bands are huge here unlike MS. Also, getting staff internally is not easy

LinkedIn flock Jun 15, 2019

They are exceptional folks. LinkedIn channel is full of people grumbling about the difficulty of promotion to Staff.

LinkedIn yoyobabe Jun 15, 2019

I know a guy who moved from infra team from LI - staff to Sr. Engineer at MS Recruiter is lying. I know folks who are 8+ and staff in Linkedin All depends on how you perform in the interview You are the brand not LI or MS

Microsoft dungarees Jun 15, 2019

At Microsoft exceptional folk would make it to 63 in 4.5-5 years..

Microsoft LeadbyXpl3 Jun 15, 2019

Six years in MSFT still 62- depends on your team/manager. I have got the worst managers you can think of.

Microsoft dungarees Jun 15, 2019

Not surprised.. I was talking about truly exceptional cases - really smart people with great managers.. Otherwise I've seen anywhere from 7-10 years..

LinkedIn nJFE36 Jun 15, 2019

I know someone promoted to staff with 5 yoe in LinkedIn. But there are only 10 staff out of 100+ engs in that org. I mean you can always try to interview staff position if you believe you are smarter than the other 40~90 seniors😀

LinkedIn okpC64 Jun 15, 2019

You should try for staff level at linkedin.

LinkedIn zjpl43 Jun 15, 2019

TC aside, there is certain expectation associated with the staff title, and there are only so much demand for staff engineers in an org, stemming either from business need or from organizational need. Not saying these constraints are so firm, but they are there. In general, the higher level you are, the more yoe you have, the narrower your careers choice would be. From recruiter's point of view, they think you have higher chance to get hired at sr level. At the end of the day, rules are man-made and are subject to negotiation.
