Senior engineering manager comp

Netflix / Mgmt Jhvei2
Sep 15, 2018 45 Comments

I am starting to interview outside of Netflix for senior engineering manager roles. What can I typically expect in terms of comp?

I know I am already doing well in terms of comp and pretty satisfied. I am curious if other companies can easily match it. I am looking for a change as I have been at Netflix for some time.

What is the target comp for M2 at Facebook? What would be the equivalent at Google? Is director role at Amazon too much of a stretch?

No god by any means. Just worked hard day and night, weekdays and weekends.

It’s important to work on things you are passionate. FWIW, I don’t care about WLB. I jumped in and did all the work when everyone around me complained about poor wlb

Yoe - 7?? Umm, and you're M2? How is that even possible?
I know Netflix have their own criteria, etc.. but still can't get your case (like 7 years after college and M2 level??)

How many people reporting to you directly or indirectly?
    Sep 15, 2018 6
    • Amazon / Eng sadTT
These many reports usually are very close to the lower bound for L7 at Amazon but generally for more seasoned L7s you are expected to lead 25+ with at least 6 directs of your own. For L8s or Directors you are looking at close to 100+.

True, but these are aren’t comparable apples to apples. As Netflix hires only senior software engineers.

Imagine having a team of L6+ only engineers.

    • Amazon / Eng sadTT
Is that really true? I know people who got in Netflix who couldn’t pass the L6 bar at Amazon.

Depends from team to team. A manager in my team recently hired senior eng from google and L6 from Amazon

    • Amazon / Eng sadTT
If you manage directly or indirectly 15+ L6+!engineers then surely it’s above average compared to L7s. At director level you are also managing senior managers who also manage multiple managers. So, still some distance to go but you have a decent chance to be an L7.

You cant plausibly interview for L8 tech leadership at Amazon with 7 years of experience. If you have a masters or PhD plus 7 YOE then L7 seems reachable but super challenging because of the breadth of leadership experience interviewers will be looking for.

L7 scope can be massive at Amazon. Comp is a legit concern, but scope and impact are probably not.

Facebook, amazon and Google has m2 at level 7. They should be able to match the salary.

Does your TC include NFLX appreciation? You probably need to compare your grant price TC rather than your current stock value TC to compare to other companies' offers.

What would your TC be if the stock stayed at the grant price?

You should be able to get L7 in Amazon, Facebook and Google and they should be able to match the salary. However, getting anything substantially more than this may not be feasible. If you are just looking for a change, you should try and see what offers you can get. Otherwise stay where you are and try to get to a director level.

Thanks. No major concern staying at Netflix. I am just feeling like i want to work on a different problem.

You do make a good point around becoming director first. I wonder how much do directors make. Everyone on blind says they make 1m+ which seems like a stretch

Director is just a next level from M2. I would assume comp difference to be not more than 20% from M2. BTW, I thought netflix has flat hierarchy and they didn't have VP->director->m2->m1. Is that not right?

I manage a team of around 10 right now, expect to start managing managers and maybe ~20 indirect reports by the end of the year. What M2 traits are valued at Netflix? People/org stuff? System design?

@sum41pwd Are you an M2? I thought M2 always were MoMs. Not so at FB is it?

Not M2 yet. Also, very senior managers can get hired into M2 even if they start out managing ICs (or so I heard)
