Staff is usually one step above Senior. Also known as Group or Lead elsewhere.

^^ fake news .. confirm with the recruiter if you're interviewing at level 5. In customer experience org, senior= level 5. In Engg org, staff = level 5. Also, level 6 = group PM .. So we have that position as well

lol fake news it seems. 😂

So does that mean staff and Senior PM is the same role

Jet LKJHHH Jun 28, 2019

Nope. Staff sounds like some fake engineering product role. L5 is Sr Prod Mgr. L6 is GPM.

What does fake engineering product role mean? I 🤔

Wayfair Vbbk01 OP Jun 28, 2019

I mean they have the position listed on the website. Is it just a different external title for a Senior PM role

Staff is L5 in engineering ladder , in PM ladder L5 is Sr. They are changing it though. Staff PM is same as Sr PM

It depends on which vertical is hiring you. Some verticals have L4 - Product Managers L5 - Senior Product Manager L6 - Principal/ Group Product Manager Other verticals have L4 - Senior Product Manager L5 - Staff Product Manager L6 - Principal/ Group Product Manager Check with the recruiter whether it's for L4 or L5.

Do you know which vertical follows what ?

Walmart.com HKFP47 Jun 29, 2019

If you want to be in pure product , only opt for senior . staff is more or like treated as scrum master or program manager.

My understanding was Sr -> Staff -> Group. Is that not the case?

Walmart.com rand.randm Jun 29, 2019

There is a mess up in levels and they are normalizing it now. L5 is Sr Product in some teams and and Staff in some where normalization has happened.
