Hey guys, I am a fresh grad and join current company for 8 months. I’ve been mostly working operational tasks till now. My last project is disrupted and deprioritized due to management transition. I’ve been asking for new project in last 2 months and was told to focus on Ops and region build. Recently my manager start checking-in my committed lines of code in every 1 on 1. I feel stressed and devastated to go to office everyday. Any tips for new grad to survive? What should I do to get more coding task? Thanks
Your mgr is creating a paper trail for a PIP. I’d just skip the drama / stress and look for a new job. Don’t try to transfer, they can be dicks and put you on a PIP which basically blocks your xfer. Edit: depending on how long these discussions have been going and if your mgr is using words like learning / developmental opportunities etc., you may have somewhere between 0-6mo to get out. Should be plenty of time to crunch leetcode and get a new job. Plenty of companies are hiring and every company needs engineers more than the inverse right now, so it’s a good place to be. Chin up and move on.
Can one crunch leetcode in two months and get a job at FANG like company? Finding it very hard to manage work and preparing for interviews.
You might be on dev plan and the code scrutiny is the manager documenting it. Start leeting.
find a project on bitbucket/github and start contributing to get more coding. lots of good projects with high coding standards out there.
You have to become comfortable having every aspect of your coding work peer reviewed. Your manager is doing you a favor by doing the reviews. Consider this: if you are comfortable having the world use the software you create, why wouldn’t you want to invite your manager to inspect your code?
Does your team have a SIM or JIRA backlog you can work from? What does your commit history look like? How many commits per week do you have? It’s a red flag if as an SDE1 you don’t have at least 1 commit per week on average.
Probably not what you want to hear, but I'd start looking for other jobs/other teams to work at
Definitely start leetcode practice. But i am trying to figure if I do have performance issue or how to make impacts as a new hire.
