I do corp finance, i dont want to do corp finance forever. I want to do consulting eventually for a firm that focuses on conservation finance or impact investing. I feel that a mba might open doors from me. Mba from top 10-12 school is the goal. Any advice?
no
No, MBAs are so expensive and companies are understanding now that âbusinessâ is not a skill. Study a skill if you want/can if not invest in doing a business. The best way to learn business is making business.
You will spend the rest of your life chasing shiny illusions of success â only to reach the end and question the purpose of it all.
Im going mainly for the networking opportunities and doors it may open
You can network here, tons of top 10 alums
For career switchers an MBA can be an excellent way to make a transition. Mine had a two year ROI but I had a significant scholarship. I have yet to meet an alum from a top 10 who regrets it. It is expensive and the opportunity cost is high, but it's also a ton of fun, a break from work and creates an instant network.
TC???
4.5 years deep here. Salary is low but looking at 7 digit payout pretty soooon
If you want to do any kind of business consulting for a living, the best path is to do high-prestige consulting. Practically speaking, for most people the only ways to do that are to either do it straight out of undergrad or to do it out of an MBA. Given where you are now, If youâre really set on that goal, you should do an MBA at the best school you can get into.
It will open doors, but just go in knowing where those doors lead (and their comp). MBA is best for early on in career. If your comp in the 100k+ range or you have already been working 5+ years, it's probably too late. Unless you really need a way to transition careers, you are likely better off just grinding out promos. Source: went to a top 5 MBA after working outside tech for 4 years. Comp went from $60k to $180k and I got to party and travel for 2 years while building an amazing network.
How old are you? Or YOE maybe. Because if youâre fresh out of college or with just a couple years, 5 max, and either do a night school thing if youâre just looking for the tag on your resume, or go to a GOOD school for the networking. Depends on what you really want out of it. But if youâre 35-40 looking to go back and get MBA and think thatâll suddenly open doors, nah man.
Poll or TC.
