I worked in hardware department for 5+ years and got promoted to ict4 sometime ago. Phd+YOE=6. Currently I am in a good team and making about 300+k per year with good stock price. But I don’t see much potential to promote to ict5 and career growth. Also hardware’s promotion standard is very high. Usually it requires 10+ yrs with excellent performance to become manager. Upper level management is also very tough to their employee. I have friends switching to software every year though around their 40s. So I always thinking whether I should switch to software. I have ee phd degree and know basics about software. I wrote GUI, python and matlab for fun in daily work. Should I take 2 year salary decrease and switch to software?
Is it possible to swotch in your 40s
What’s the problem with that?
Yes, ee background usually have software background. Basic software jobs are usually much easier than ee job but pay much better. My friend switched to software always say the job is too easy and it doesn’t worth that much pay. But market decides everything. People doing hardware is usually more mean on spending so managers in this area are also more mean because of the hardware nature. The more you know how hardware works the more mean you to your team and daily life spendings. Part of hardware job is to squeeze cost at every cost. This makes people in this area more hesitant on spending.
No
Netflix is a good company. Why you don’t recommend to switch?
Did you switch or did you decided to stay in ee?
I am still in ee. Good software engineer get similar pay as mine so far. I will try to start up company instead of working as software engineer. There are many things I can do.
I would love to connect and see if we can do something together. DM me if you are interested.
Exactly, that is also one option for us in ee. Best of luck
Yes.
Reason?
Hardware engineering is constantly on the chopping block. Oracle has laid off thousands from hardware in the last year.
