Smoking..

Haven't smoked since 70 days. Went cold turkey completely. Having a strong urge to smoke today. Any ex-smokers, it would be great if you can share some tips. How do you resist this urge?

Yup, feeling like "I can smoke one and stop again". Thanks, will try and resist. I know if I smoke one, I will end up starting all over again.

I either go for a short run or head to the gym for a workout... it’s the only way I can get past the urge.

Seriously. When I quit, seeing my ability to run faster and for longer distances is what kept me from relapsing.

Yeah i second that, plus its been 2 years i am smoke-free i don’t hang out at such places and only surround myself with health freaks, watching a ripped body in Gym makes me feel motivated!

Watch videos of lung cancer patients. Think of not being around for your future family. My mom was a smoker for years and the thought of her never meeting her grandkids scared her into quitting.

This is the lamest advice which makes me think were you even a smoker? These thoughts never help. Running helps, sports helps, hell even drinking lots of suger helps but not such YouTube videos, the mind simply ignores them when it is craving for a smoke.

Did I say I was a smoker?

Staying quit- 50 days now. Gave in once, while traveling. All I know is waiting for a few mins when the urge is the strongest, helps. Good job buddy!

Yes, staying away from drinks too for now. This urge becomes too strong if I have even 1 beer. May the force be with you too, my friend.

Man booze is literally my gateway to smoking..end of night I’ll end up with a pack of parlies in my pocket. Don’t drink much either now due to it to begin a gateway. Maybe a glass of wine or beer here or there

Got a month ahead of you. Did you read Alen Carrs book? Gives a good framework on why you want to smoke and the lies you tell yourself. Anyways, chances are you dont have an urge to smoke. You know smoking sucks, it tastes bad, it makes you feel like shit. You probably have something else going on, are anxious, bored, frustrated, and rather than dealing with that you want the clutch of a cigarette that you've associated with a release, a small victory or pleasure. But it's not that. You want a victory or a pleasure? Defeat the craving, become stronger than it, choose the adult way of delayed gratification rather than the childish instant one.

Thanks, I'll give that book a try.

+1 to the book - it's amazing. I and a friend of mine both quit smoking because of it. Never smoked even one cigarette after that, and zero withdrawal pain. HIGHLY recommend.

Just avoid at all costs places that sell or offer cigarettes

I was in the same boat once, 4 months of cold turkey quit and then I day I thought let me test myself and I was back to pack a day in 24 hours :( Don't do it, the guilt will kill you!

Go for a run, hike, workout, or whatever.

I remember that I'd subconsciously grab my keys and wallet and get ready to go to the convenience store. Oddest thing to feel totally unable to control the urge. Exercise definitely helps. Recently, I bummed a dip from a friend of mine while watching a movie (been tobacco free for 5 years so felt pretty ok with it). I felt so nauseous and I feel great knowing that that one experience turned me off of the stuff for good. I genuinely do not want tobacco products anymore.

Don’t do it, out of respect for your body. Quit in 2009.
