Hi fellow blinders. I just completed my 8 year us’versary. Yay.. that said my wife and I are home sick and want to move back to India/ Singapore for rest of our life. A lil bit about us. I am almost 40 and my wife is a home maker. We have a son who is 6 yo now. We have been seriously considering moving back this year or in the next couple of years max. Reason is we are increasingly home sick and both of our parents need assistance and help. I wanted to check here if anyone knows for sure about social security benefits. From what I have heard and read if a person contributes to social security for 10 years or more he / she is eligible for ss benefits in India/ Singapore. If that is the case I’d consider staying here for 2 more years but if it’s not true or there’s some caveat that disqualifies non citizens I am ready to go back now. Any info is helpful. I have also asked legal counsel in the company but with no clear answer. Thanks all.

I believe you do. You have to be a citizen though. And if you have worked for 120 months with a GC or add citizen you are eligible. This is what I have researched. Anyone with actual experience can pitch in
Go to ssa.gov and check how many credits you have now. You need 40 credits to start receiving social security retirement benefits when you are past 67.5 (for full benefits). This publication https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10137.pdf says you will receive payments in India if you have 40 credits. You don’t need to be a citizen of the US for that. You need to be a citizen of India. See page 7.
Thanks for the info, I didn't know this. I have ~6 yoe and I see following on my ssa statement " To get retirement benefits, you need 40 credits of work. Your record shows you have at least 32 credits at this time, including assumed credits for last year and this year if you continue to work." For folks looking for this, it would be on page2 first line..
Thanks <B> Slayer. This is v helpful.@LEtV72. Where do you see at least 32? And in 6 years it should be 24 at max right? Am I missing something?
I found this useful: https://www.investopedia.com/advisor-network/articles/social-security-benefits-nonus-citizens/ Answer is: likely yes but it depends. Use the tool provided in the linked article to tell.
Yes you will entitled to social security benefits after completion of 10 yrs or 40 credits. Browse SSN website, the details can be found there
OP - were you able to confirm on this? I am looking for same information
No as in we won’t get the benefits?
