I went on a random hike this Saturday. I couldn't help but notice that white people prefer to get dogs from shelters / rescues but Asians go for purebred pups (like red white border collies and Pomeranians). These dogs cost more than $1500 and that's just for the puppy!! Similar with cars: my white friends generally drive Subarus / Priuses but Asians go for luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes. Is it just me or are Asian people (especially the Chinese) more materialistic? TC: 230k
I have this same perception.
Sorry, was implying that this was true for all people I met on the hike - I'm pretty interested in dogs
I’m an Indian and I kinda see OP’s point here. I’ve a lots of friends who are extremely frugal, but drive expensive cars. I think it’s more to do with the way things are in India. You don’t get to own these luxury cars, unless you’re filthy rich back there. So it’s more like an aspiration/boasting to own a luxury car like BMW or Merc. Also I genuinely feel OP wasn’t trying to be racist.
agree ^. OPs post does not qualify as the standared indian / asian hate post of the day
As a south east asian I can attest to the whole affinity we people have towards BMWs and Mercs. Back home for the greater majority of people driving such vehicle is not a possibility. So maybe that could be a factor. But I wouldn’t make sweeping generalizations. And OP doesn’t come off as a bigot, so let’s not crucify him.
((International)) Chinese people are very materialistic. (Am American chinese). Koreans can be that way too. But Chinese people love flexing even when they aren’t rich. I’m not sure why.
It’s just part of the culture
Nicely stated, it is a cultural thing. And like culture, material desires will shift through time. Oh, And, we’re all materialistic whether we’d like to admit it or not. White people in the Bay Area (like me) just like to cover up their materialism with virtue signaling so we can sit in the corner at Wholefoods with our open towed shoes and feel good about ourselves while quietly judging how the rest of the world just doesn’t get it. Lol
Why labeling all Asians/Chinese into a category by just hanging out with a few LOl this post is ridiculously shallow. Many Asians I know are extremely frugal even making a lot still they save a lot. What’s the point of putting a group of people in a specific bucket when you only randomly hang out with a few once???
Fob Chinese are more materialistic. I'm an American born Chinese. But seriously, go meet more people. I know lots of Asians (even fobs) who make a lot but are frugal. Don't know about the rest
I met this group of 7-foot tall Nepalese dudes, so people from Nepal are just really tall, right?
where did this happen?
Georgia Tech.
I've seen both ends of this. At the end of the day its about the priority of the person. They are usually extremely frugal or extremely lavish if you only judge by what you see. But if you really dig deeper, it's more about what that person care most. The person who drives a Corolla probably spends a fuck ton on constantly traveling all over the place because that's what that person really cares about. Meanwhile that person who drives a borderline luxury car stays at home for the most part of the year. Of course, it's not just limited by these. I know someone who spends crazy lot on food (like frequent high end restaurants, shops exclusively at Whole Foods etc) because idk. But drives a basic Civic. As for the car thing alone, I agree with Tesseract|. In most Asian countries, cars are a lot more expensive (think 2-3x) than in the US. Especially if they might go back to their home country in the future, they would want to at least experience driving such cars. As for pets, idk. Personally, I have more of an opposite observation than yours. But then again, most people I know (including myself) didn't like the idea and responsibilities that comes with having a pet.
Can you explain what “confirmation bias” is, followed by “anecdotal evidence”?
So you haven't had this experience?
Bonus point if you can explain "cultural relativism*
