I never asked leetcode questions, I always invent new questions, although the difficulty level should be similar to leet code middle. I just want to filter out candidates who just memorize leetcode solutions.

I’d be proud to have a dev on my team that respected my opportunity so much that they grind on hundreds of leetcode questions. Undoubtedly they would learn a lot and frankly my current devs could learn a few things by doing it themselves.

With a person like that you don’t have to wonder if they will put in the effort when needed on the job.

I regularly deprecat questions and invent new ones. I have quite a few friends here doing similar things. And we have a website showing all the banned questions which go to leetcode or similar things.

    • MCAu73 what sort of questions do you ask? What are you trying to determine from the exercise that you challenge the candidate? Or do you have a focus area such as graph, dynP, etc?
      Oct 19, 2018
    • Google mCAu73
No specific focus area, usually I like to go from less difficult questions, once the candidate solves that, I will ask what if the matrix/tree/graph grows very large or fast, or there are challenging concurrency issues, what could be the distributed/parallel solutions. Or, sometimes we discuss performance issues for some specific code the candidates write. I found usually these additional questions and discussion reveal the candidates real capabilities.

Anyways, I suggest people not just memorizing leetcode questions. Read the fundamental books like introduction to algorithms, operating systems, etc. At least for the dozens of candidates I interviewed every year, I try to guarantee to filter out people who can just do leetcode. And I do believe more and more interviewers are having similar minds as me, at least colleagues I know around me.

Most of these companies ask from questions bank where leetcode is one of them. So i believe time constraint is good

just got offers from all the companies you mentioned. my only point is that it is a mistake to *only* use leetcode and not practice real interview situation

You can solve 700 problems and still come across a problem that you are unable to solve. Even worse just because you have solved those 700 problems didn't guarantee that you will able to solve them again in a phone interview. You need to review regularly. I had way better luck with Interview Cake because of the breadth and better quality of solutions compared to leetcode. It's expensive but I bought it at a discount on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/153143222043

Was enough to get offers from LinkedIn, Google, oracle and a couple of startups.
