Spotify on Watch 3

Microsoft / Eng 20% raise
Sep 17, 2017 63 Comments

Who's fault is it that this isn't happening?

Some suggested its a pride thing for Spotify. Not sure how this makes sense. People would still be using Spotify just on a different device. They would still use the full app to manage playlists.

Some say its a technical thing. Clearly false as Apple can do it.

Some say Apple is disallowing Spotify. Surely this is an antitrust issue?

Wait, you can't use Spotify on Watch 3? What.the.fuck.

That was the primary reason I was going to switch since I don't want to carry my phone around at the gym or running/biking.

I'll probably switch to Apple Music then too... damnit

You still have to carry your phone, right?

Was bummed when I got the first watch they made, thinking the same thing- no phone to run with and take to gym. Watch needs the phone so you have to keep the phone within range of the watch.

If I have to take my phone, I don't need the watch.

The point of watch 3 is that since it has LTE you don't need to take your phone

Even with watch 1 you can still play (downloaded) music and monitor workouts. But I guess you would have nothing to play with between sets.

Who cares. E watches are useless. Battery life too short. Apple products are increasingly me too copies of other stuff. People pay extra to get older laptops w.o. The LCD screen. Laptops from other vendors all have better specs, same for phones. The endless profits from phone will kill the company because they stopped having to innovate. They are like in with sys 370, dinosaur walking.

Apple sells more watches now than any other watch manufacturer in the world, period. And that’s significant growth from last quarter.

You may not find the product category useful, but rest assured that the market doesn’t care about your opinion

Well sure, nobody cares about me. I'm just some asshole on blind. I should have focused more on the underlying problem with Apple as I see it, which is the lack of pressure to be Innovative on their products because they have so much money.

His point is just that platform companies making default apps and integrations is a common way to root out competition. I think an interesting stat Apple offered at last years WWDC was that Apple maps is used on iPhones 4x as much as google maps; do you really think is is not because of the default effect? Why do you think regular navigation deeplinks that don’t specify apps can’t be opened with google maps on iPhone?

You never directly ban anyone.....just make it impossible for them to do business by carving out specific rules to weed out the competition. Companies that don't threaten your products of course don't have to play by those.

The guidelines for using the watchOS platform and accompanying APIs are all here: https://developer.apple.com/watchos/

FYI: Pandora, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and SoundCloud are available on Apple Watch.

Apple does this with their biggest partners all the time. They'll make some compatibility changes with a new version that will take the partner forever to implement. Meanwhile, Apples competing product will be compatible already. A little while later, after user complaints, Apple will go out of their way to help the partner integrate.

I've seen Apple do this multiple times with Mac and iOS products.

The Watch is still not a completely mature product. They’re iterating it to get it to where it needs to be. LTE is a huge step in setting it free and making it an independent product. While they iterate, they’re happy to lock the product in because there’s plenty of customers in the Apple ecosystem who will buy the Watch. That’s a reasonable position to hold.

Apple didn’t even know how the first Watch would be received. It’s evident in how the marketing changed to focus in on the fitness and health segment from the 2nd generation onwards. They put the series 0 out in the wild, collected feedback and made a more focused product in the 2nd gen. They’re continuing that with series 3.

I think in due time the Watch will grow up and have better platform level support for third parties. The APIs will mature and the ecosystem will build on itself to get us to a product that stands on it’s own.

Greatness takes time and focus. Spotify and other third party integrations aren’t important right now for Apple. What’s important is finding out what the right product to make is and I think they’re close.

Yep. Agree. But Spotify could do just playlists. No search etc. Sync, select and play a playlist created on phone. Something minimal. Phase 0.

I and many other watch users I know don't give a shit about the fitness features at all. I want this thing to free me from need to be near my phone and enable me to do phone stuff when my phone runs out of batteries.

The Watch is not yet a mature product, just as Halos mentioned. Let me put it to you this way: the Watch needs a compelling reason to allow itself to minimize computing. If you look at a task-based ecosystem, you want to focus on the object you’re working on, rather than using the device itself. The Watch aims to minimize interactions, allowing you to experience what’s at the forefront. We’re still in our phase of mobile device computing. Apple can’t shift sales away from iPhone yet. The productivity and profit is not quite there with the Watch. It’ll take a paradigmatic shift, something that might even be augmented by brain-wave controls or spooky scifi Black Mirror devices. iPhone is too profitable to cause developments to move toward the Watch.

Why are so many voting in the poll that Apple is a monopoly? Nothing is stopping Spotify from releasing tvOS and watchOS apps. I subscribe to iHeart Radio and it works on my iPhone and Apple TV. Spotify is just not making those apps. (Still don't want to wear a watch personally.)
