Starting at Amazon - Tips

Don't know if this is impostor syndrome. I'll be working at Amazon pretty soon. Like in a month. I feel like I'm not prepared for what is to come. They gave me a ridiculous top of the line SDE 2 offer. I don't even know what is expected of me. I hope they don't expect me to pull miracles on day 1. What can I do from now till start date to make my transition easier and to calm my nerves? 3 YOE

From second week get a meeting with your manager and ask him what exactly he expects from you... Do not wait for him to assign you tasks... My manager fucked me after 6 months... I finished everything that was assigned to me but said I don't have the talent to do something that I was never asked to ....

Wow ok. That's a good piece of advice. Will do that. Better to get continuous feedback than feedback every perf review

Old post, but I think you're missing something and wanna just give advice. The most important talent in software engineering is knowing what to work on. You need to either invent or discover projects and then only work on those you are sure are the most critical at the expense of just about everything else. This is tough and inevitably leads you into hard discussions with all kinds of people. The result however is actually making a difference versus having knocked off a few menial tasks.

Don't start chilling out thinking the hard part is done; I have seen people come in to teams and operate like they used to do in their old place, and fail shortly after. The first 6 months you need to deliver results and learn as much as you can. Be professional. If your manager asks you to do something, do it well before the deadline if you can. Don't make your manager follow up. Make sure you ask constant feedback (at least weekly in the beginning) and IMPLEMENT said feedback. If you get done with your tasks, help others, update docs, ask manager for more work.

As others have said, ask your manager for expectations and feedback and act on it. Good luck to you! Also 275k is an amazing offer for 3 YoE at any company (especially Amazon, who don't pay the best). Congrats!

Did you have to negotiate the offer ? If yes - can you give some insight?
