I’m starting a full-time job at Facebook soon. I worry that dumb jokes I make in private groupchats could be leaked to the world as “Facebook Employee Makes Sexist Remarks” or whatever. I’m not an asshole but I think there’s a difference between jokes you make in private and statements which stand up to public scrutiny. Is this a reasonable worry? I’m considering significantly curtailing my use of electronic communication with friends. Edit: to be clear I’m talking about communication with friends outside of work. Obviously I’m professional around coworkers
Reasonable. You shouldn’t make these jokes with your work guys. Making it with your friends outside of work is your personal life, which you own not FB
"private" group chats are recorded. Don't say anything at work that you'd be embarrassed about when talking to an HR representative. if you are messaging people outside the company, the messenger messages aren't recorded. It's a very different world now at most tech companies. I grew up where there was smoking in offices, pin up nudes in the shop/fabrication areas, crude jokes, etc. The "No fun police" are out in force. Sucks to be your generation.
I say be yourself. If it leaks and it turns out you're an asshole, then it will be a good lesson for you to grow up.
Too expensive a lesson... too dangerous an idea. 💯 Would not recommend
Rule of Thumb: Conduct yourself in private as though you were in public and you’ll be in good shape. FB company communication used to happen through your personal chat/feed. A few years ago they split this and now offer it as an external product — FB workplace. FB workplace messages are all “recorded” for legal purposes, as well any communication between employees. But even though personal messages may not show up with a red “recording” icon, remember that Facebook doesn’t ever really delete anything. Things are “deleted” by being anonymized.
Uhh. Yeah dont do sexist jokes at work. It is not private. Don’t make your private social media available to coworkers either. Especially dont do stupidass tweets, unless you are trump. Just because you think something is funny doesnt mean shit.
Do not say, write or do anything in the workplace and on your employer owned or managed infrastructure that you would not want replayed in a meeting with HR and your boss. For discussions with friends that you want to remain private, use a different system that is not owned or managed by your employer. So for an FB employee, avoid FB messenger and WhatsApp in favor of something like Signal. I think WA is actually pretty safe with E2E encryption, but it’s owned by FB so I wouldn’t take the risk in your situation.
Yes you need to be careful about this outside of work. If you make a PR problem for your employer you will be fired and have trouble finding something new.
Just stop saying stupid shit and you shouldn’t have anything to worry about
Use Signal, iMessage, WhatsApp, or anything that’s E2EE.
Reasonable. Always act in a way that wouldn't be embarrassing if it got published. In your private communications be consistent with your public image.
