What are some typical offers from pre IPO companies? I have two offers for senior engineering position (4 yoe). I'm really passionate about the startup's work but this seems like too much money to turn down. Large tech company: 195k salary 15% bonus 30k sign on 600k RSU 404k TC first year Pre IPO company 195k salary 15% bonus 80k options at $3.5 strike vested over 4 years.
I am curious how the 80k options @ 3.5S work. When do you buy the shares? ASAP and sell when they vest? Or do you have the RIGHT to buy 80k at a later date? Also, where can one get the money to get 280K to buy the options?
Obviously large tech company
I’m curious to know what your final decision is. I’m currently thinking over a similar decision (but my TC scale is lower than yours by about 25%).
My opinion is: Join large tech now. During recession, join startup. Less TC difference, and investors have nowhere else to put their money other than startups.
I wouldve thought that during recessions startups wouldn't be able to raise money.
that looks like a typical offer. don’t make a decision based on TC. decide based on what you want to work on, autonomy, growth opportunity etc. any bigco is going to offer you the same job more or less in a year or 4 years from now. the perfect startup job is hard to come by. also keep in mind it’s not permanent. you can walk after a year or even a month.
That TC is hard to pass up and one other thing a larger company provides is more stability. However, if you're passionate about the startup and have enough money to last you a buffer period in case they shut down, go for that. Especially if the large company is only attractive for the monetary aspect. One other thing to consider is the ability or inability to move around in a larger company.
THAT tc with 4 yoe😱... what do you do?
