Strategy& Manager -> MBA -> FAANG

Hey guys, Seeking opinions on what to expect as I go thru recruiting at M7 for Tech / FAANG for Strategy roles or PM. Five years work experience in internal product and then strategy consulting - and was on accelerated path hence left at the Manager level - is L5 Strategy & Ops Lead doable at Google? Other roles that would fit in, product strategy? Appreciate thoughts on where I should be thinking in terms of comp, role and level.

You're working with different things. Uber actually has boots on the ground ops. FB is a pure BA/marketing play. Uber will need more strategy roles. Supply and demand.

Is it 5 years of total work experience or 5 years of work experience then your MBA then another 3-5 somewhere else as you made it to mgr. If it's not the latter, level 4 is likely, level 5 might be a stretch. Consulting experience doesn't carry as much weight around here as experience doing product MGMT elsewhere. That being said....strategy and ops / product my is the best place for it. Forgot to say....our PMs are wicked sharp. I hope you have some serious tech skills

Can you elaborate on serious tech skills. I mean I get being able to talk to engineers, etc. I have programmed apps on the side, though I'm not from an eng background myself - mostly self taught. Hear that phrase often and would like to unpack what it means when you say that.

To answer your question about what does it mean that our PMs are wicked smart It means that our PMs talk to our client's smartest people and can describe the tech in a level of details that leaves even techies dumbfoundly amazed. Let's put it this way...if you do not describe yourself as a techy with biz skills..then you are probably not technical enough to be a PM. My recommendation is to do 1) check out LinkedIn and see who is in your ideal role today and 2) give our strategy group a try. One last piece of advice. Nobody cares about consulting or consultants outside of consulting. Get ready to be humbled by what level non consultanting firms offer you.

BTW...when you say "strategy roles or PM"....does PM mean product MGMT or project manager?

Product management or Corp Strat. And 5 years WE prior to school. Wouldn't L5 be doable for a Strat role given experience and L4 for PM?

How many years of post work experience do you have post mba? It really comes down to how well you convey the benefit of your strategy consulting experience. One thing that is hard for consultants to get when coming here is that we look for value delivered and not time at a level or school. In all honesty - the fact that you came from a top 7 school and you worked in consulting will mean that people will interview you much harder than if you had come from a top 25 and worked in texh
