asking for a friend (whos not on blind), deciding between new grad offers for Stripe and MS

she’s leaning towards MS because of location, wl balance, and higher take home money but doesnt know the team or work so is unsure about the growth she’d experience there.

Stripe is “hotter” with a choice of team and bigger impact, but wl balance might be compromised and she doesn’t want to live in SF

thoughts?

Stripe! Definitely not MS. As a new grad in Microsoft, your main job is writing unit test for other's code! You will be treated like shit in Microsoft! Please don't go, don't want to see another soul been crushed...

@FuGU87 so it seems you know the story : Microsoft shipped Outlook on IOS and Android via acquisition. Microsoft simply replaced the Icon and then you got Outlook App 😂🤣. Microsoft outlook have a couple hundreds engineers working on it for years but they just can't deliver! So management spent 100m and bought an App created by a team of 11 (3 of them are contractors)

@FuGU87 Microsoft ships Outlook via acquisition 😄 . Yeah since you mentioned you know some VP( Why everyone in Microsoft is always trying to tell you they know some VP ?) Tell the VP they did a good job. Well I remember some VP was fired because of not being able to deliver Outlook but I guess it is not your friend... I hope Microsoft engineers can build next version of Outlook App. Go Outlook !

So it's true, but so what? Acquisitions are great. Start-up people know how to do start-up things.

I think I lost you somewhere. What are we debating here again? :) You claim that Microsoft sucks because of low pay, soul-crushing political day-to-day Life, being treated like shit, and because they (the Office team??) asked you - a sr engineer - to write unit tests. I beg to differ. It's a great software engineering company and one can learn a lot here while working on some very interesting problems.

What? How's this even a question? Work life balance a concern for new grad? Stripe engineering is strong, and she'll learn a lot.

But stripe is so narrow. No doubt there are smart people there and you could have a lot of success, but you're tied down. Microsoft has a lot more avenues, same for Google or Amazon. If stripe isn't significantly better, I would try and find a position at a company that has a good long term vision. Unless you are in a visionary role at stripe, if that's the case congrats!

Lmao. This has to be OP trolling. Stripe has a great rep compared to MS's questionable rep that's very team dependent. Honestly if this isn't a troll she should go to MS and learn why company culture matters the hard way after wasting a few yrs there

Was at MSFT my first two years after graduation (one of those "great" orgs just mentioned above ^) and learnt nothing. It moves crazy slow, title change promotions take 2+ years min and plus you're underpaid.

P.S. stripe has a seattle office too!

You guys have a very strange tainted perspective. I've been at MSFT for many years and have done things that are unthought of at other companies in terms of impact. From owning critical kernel components as a relatively junior engineer to shipping software to millions of users with a weekly release cadence. It's a large company of small teams where you can have an incredible impact. It's also very diverse -- whatever you can think of - this company has it or has done it.

Now, there are shitty toxic teams -- that's true of any large company. You just need to identify them and move on quickly. Such teams (Mediaroom is one example) tend to get shut down or sold eventually.

Stripe hands down. Microsoft has been the new IBM for a long time now. Development practices, tech stack, mindset are all very outdated. The difference in where she’ll be 5yrs down the line is pretty dramatic between the two companies.

Also the initial comp for new grads might look good at Microsoft but the key is that the refreshers are practically nothing. Comp at Microsoft is not competitive with Stripe and other top companies.

Tbf, Dropbox was the hottest company like 2 years ago. Had offers, everyone thought I was an idiot for not going, but I needed more liquid cash for my family. Diff at my level was hundreds of thousands. I got into a sexy org and up until recently I wasn’t sure if I made the right decision. Even now I’m still not sure.

My only point of advice is that be careful of this whole flavor of the week startup thing, but since she’s a new grad, that’s less important. Stripe is killing it rn. I recently saw collison speak and he seems brilliant beyond his years. I’d go there if I were younger. Spend a year or two in the valley. And It’s not as if amazon or msft won’t take you after a stint at stripe.

Had offers from two unicorns, Amazon, and Microsoft two years ago. Chose Microsoft because I wanted to work on low level code and massive distributed systems. This was during the height of negative PR for Amazon so I stayed away.

I've been able to do that at Azure and in AI & Research, but sometimes I think it would be nice to be surrounded by people my age (25). Theres great work life balance here since all my coworkers have kids and spouses, no one bats an eye if you say you need to go and drive someone to the airport. But on the opposite side of that, people don't go and hang out after work. It was a staple of the startup atmosphere when I worked in SF.

My point is: think about the whole package when choosing. Great work life balance here but not as fun of an atmosphere.

I would say msft. Don’t see the big deal with another payment platform. She can switch to literally any domain at Microsoft (crypto, AR/VR, AI, cloud, productivity, research, gaming, and others) shell need to find a totally different gig once she realizes how boring payment processing is

Definitely MSFT. She'll learn a ton in there first 2-3 years. After that she'd be able to go anywhere if she discovers that she doesn't like msft.

As an ex long time MSFT employee I can’t disagree strongly enough. MSFT is now entirely distinct from the rest of the industry technology-wise, and it moves slower than other top companies. MSFT is a great place if you want to work on operating systems or low level code but otherwise there’s no point. You learn more and make more money elsewhere.

The commenters on this - lol.

I don’t think anything we say is going to be helpful to your friend.

    My thoughts anyway

where you want to live is a super big deal.

Also, even if you’re young, work life balance is super important. If she says it is important, it is important.

And YES growth is important, but I am tired of all of these elitist tech bros thinking that we all have to be absolutely obsessed with our jobs and code outside of work all the time (not talking about anyone on this thread rn, but it is a very real attitude your friend may have experienced.)

Your friend sounds like she has an awesome career ahead of her.

Most importantly - negotiate for that MONEY!!!

Well I see a massive change in Office org and we are learning a lot, my team does open source, uses latest and greatest and I am able to award 63 and up random Special stock awards ranging between 20-50 k on top of salary and bonuses which is keeping them around, unlike other orgs, we need to do this wider across the company and make sure we retain folks
