Suggestions on things to do before joining a new job

I do have a five day trip planned and will be spending time with family and friends. But other than that do you guys have suggestions on what can I do for a week to ten days - simple project, or a nice course on Coursera etc. Context: I have been working in C (and a bit of python for unit tests) and will be moving to Facebook which is completely different world and so want to ramp up a bit! Thanks in advance!

Where do you want to be five years from now? A techie? People manager? Evangelist? Find a self help book to get you there. Your job will automatically teach you what you need to know

thanks for the insight! That's a good idea - I'll start thinking in those lines

Dude worry about ramping up once you get to Facebook. You'll do just fine without preparation beforehand, and will be working your ass off once you get there. Take this rare opportunity to do anything not related to work.

If you have kids, travel with them now that it is summer.

I start smoking good way to meet people and quit 1-2 months in.

Actually the thing I would do is spend more times with friends family and go travel. You have free time and starting on a new journey, Facebook will help you learn. Go explore, take a roadtrip and spend more times with people you will miws. Go visit grandma. Go visit friends from hs

I would recommend to just relax and do nothing to do with work. Spend time with family, friends, go outside on the beach and reflect, go on a hike, wander around town with no goal. There are so few times in our entire lives that we don’t have a job and the unending tasks that come with it that I would seize this opportunity. If you really want to ignore this advice, just learn php and c++. But I learned all this in boot camp and it was no problem at all.
