I currently live in Orange County, California, mostly remote, 10-25% travel, flexible working hours, great WLB, TC 350. My kids really enjoy the attractions nearby in Southern California, lots of fun. Got a job at FB Seattle with 540 TC, it’s almost 2x of my current TC, given no state tax in Washington. Considering much better RSU refresh at FB, TC can go beyond 600k in 2 years. Will you take the 2x TC, along with worse weather, worse WLB, and arguably worse education? Both are management jobs, if that matters to the decision. Another temporary option is to work in Seattle and go back home every weekend. Flight is 3 hours one way, 5 hours door to door.
Jesus Christ it's really not that bad living in a colder state. I live in the Midwest, just as gray, when it's cold out you just put on a coat hat and gloves and you'll live. For that TC you take the job every time. It's really not bad at all lol
I would argue that at OPs level money doesn't have the same incremental value. $50k-> $100k is huge, $100k-> $200k is big but not the same huge leap, at OPs level there is some diminishing returns in effect. There are only so many comforts money can afford you and I honestly think when with the old tc OP is very upper-mid class comfortable. That said I'd prolly still take it and use the money to retire early. Also I love Seattle so YMMV :P
With proper planning, it'll allow FIRE much faster. So, arguably, a big difference.
YOE?
I definitely wouldn't commute from OC
You cannot pay me enough to live in OC. 🍆
Omg, what a nice problem to have!
"Arguably worse education" - With $540k, you can pay to more than fix this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakeside_School_(Seattle)
Are you in Aliso Viejo office?
Consider Google in Irvine
I would echo the earlier opinion about FIRE. If you are saving aggressively so that sooner than later you can switch to only doing the work you want to do, when you want to do it, then stuffing an extra $100k+ per year into your FIRE accounts for a couple of years is definitely a fair trade off. If you’re not focused on FIRE as a goal, then the trade off is less likely to be worth it.
Vit D deficiency, depression, change of kids school/friends, faster pace, and worse wlb .... Just to name a few side effects to consider. Money is not everything
Appreciate the response from Facebook side. I heard FB Seattle is not as busy as FB Menlo Park, because many ex-MSFT folks in management. Is that true?
