Would love to hear from any folks out there who’ve successfully made the leap from tech consulting to tech sales, and what their advice might be for someone considering such a jump.

I’m a digital strategy consultant with 9 yoe. Started career mostly managing enterprise app/sys development projects, then past 3-4 years I’ve been focused at a more macro level consulting on large scale enterprise modernization initiatives. Clients typically carry CIO, CTO, or CMO titles and I feel the knowledge I’ve gained by working so closely alongside them positions me well for quick success in sales.

I really enjoy what I do, but I’m ready for a change...

I’d likely target the enterprise sales teams of the companies whose products I regularly build into solution pitches - AWS, Adobe, Microsoft, etc.

Any thoughts or advice? Pros/cons I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t have any experience in doing that leap myself but I know a few folks that did it. I’d say the #1 factor that made that move possible was network network network. The tech background will be super useful, but you now have to change your mindset, understand what are their goals and struggles and focus on filling that gap

Really appreciate your advice! The mindset change doesn’t seem too drastic since in essence both consultants and sales are problem solvers. Only difference is right now I’m brand-agnostic.

Thanks for posting a real response and not the cryptic, sarcastic BS many people seem to be comfortable posting. Thank you @RDZ

Are you particularly attracted to tech sales? Or you see it as a long hanging fruit to get into a top tier tech company? If the latter, I’d suggest other roles instead. I went from strategy consulting to few different tech roles.

I’d say it’s a mixture of both actually... The comp potential of sales is certainly attractive (along with he competitive nature), but the network and long term opportunities from a few years at top-tier company are probably the bigger driver.

Which other roles would you recommend exploring? I’m an MBA, not CS, so I doubt I’d have the chops for a true tech role. A bit of solution architect background but I’ve always brought in the guns when venturing outside of business model speak...

Sapient is the destroyer of all things. If I saw the company on a resume, I'd pass.
