The hiring committee said you met the bar for Google... But there's no headcount available for L3

Recruiters need to practice though or they'll get rusty

Was probably looped for L4 to begin with and got down-leveled by the committee (2 YoE is a hard sell for mid-level, especially coming from outside a big tech company or unicorn startup, and going into an generally conservative shop like Google).

Recruiters aren't going to feed people into the system if there's zero chance they'll actually get placed.

      I don't see why they can't hire two L3s.

OP I remember you from some previous threads and I'm in the same boat as you. Are you sure you can't just wait it out and eventually get an offer in a few months?

Recruiter called me today pretty much saying he really wants to work with me still and thinks I should try to aim for a higher level in 6 months :(

Higher level means L4, and then you would be having 2.5 years of experience and L4 will be a stretch right. Seriously don’t get the logic behind this. 😑

I feel like his recruiter lied to him when they said he passed L3 bar. It just doesn't make sense if he has to wait 6 mo to reinterview. I thought normally they would just ask for extra interviews if they thought he should be L4 instead.

I have 5 YOE, was interviewed for L4, passed HC at L3 and then froze before team matching process because of no headcount 😂😂 I honestly think L3/L4 is arbitrary, there's no guarantee you'd get L4 in 6 months even if you ace the interview.

Here's the good news: your offer is good for a year, and Google has dedicated recruiters who specifically target and work with candidates who previously received/turned down offers (I know this because I have one). L3 headcount should open up a bit in the late summer or early before the university recruiting season kicks into full gear, and/or you'll probably be able to skip the phone screen next time.

Is this a sign that we’re hitting peak demand for SWEs, or just that google is transitioning to being a low-growth company?

I don’t have hard data, but anecdotal evidence (mostly from Blind comments) suggests a) Google down levels people b) Google doesn’t pay as well as it once did c) perks are not as great.

Kinda makes sense when you’ve got what 100000 people now working there.

I think people should not dance to every tune that Google plays. Anything significant doesn’t go your way in the hiring process, just walk away! Sooner or later Google will get the message. My 2 cents.

Looks like the gravy train is ending. Google (and probably other top companies) will stop hiring L3

Did you have a location preference?

Also I thought HC approval was supposed to be good for an amount of time and you could just be put on “hold” for team match

  • Just to add some counter anecdotes (and I’ve said this in comments) I was hired this month at L3 with 7 yoe (self employed so not really counted I think). Passed HC late April and team matched end of April with one team only. They were a strong match for my bg though. So it’s possible I think still regardless of performance (I had mixed reviews) if you have the right skills for a team that’s looking.

Similar situation here. 7+ years of relevant experience and got L3 approval recently and several teams to match with.

You only need to re interview if it's for a different role. If it's the same usually they won't require you to

3-4 lowest to be considered for L4 it seems. Maybe 2 with masters
