Thoughts on the next FAANG-grade companies!

Trying to crowdsource opinions on which companies will become next generation of FAANG-grade companies. The way I’m looking at it, I’d put Salesforce, PayPal and other $100B+ marketcap enterprises with 2000%+ growth over the last decade into this bucket. Trying to learn about companies across the US; especially orgs that have past series B funding. Doesn’t matter if the company is public. Please declare your predictions, especially if you’re currently working for such company and/or if you’ve interviewed with companies where you saw tremendous growth, talent, culture and vision. Share the location, what you feel like the growth will be ($B market cap in 5-10 years) and your rationale (if you have time). Again, emphasizing post series B. Personally: Stripe and Lyft (only interviewed with them). Great impression of their leaders, lots of talent at least on product side (perceived), and tremendously large growth potential in their current operating segments. Unfortunately, I did not get offers from them... otherwise, I would’ve chosen those two companies over Amazon even if TC would’ve been lower. I wish I can tag more to cast a wider net for traffic!

It's ok, didn't tag me and I still saw this.

Lol PayPal

I wouldn't be putting my money on Salesforce and PayPal becoming the next FAANG-grade companies, that's for sure.

What's a FAANG and who cares?

Amazon thrufly OP Oct 31, 2018

MAANGO works too. I’m sure some people care. My intent was to get people’s opinion on emerging rocket ship career opportunities that’s becoming more mainstream and/or apparent. Didn’t mean to stroke/play to any ego!

This was more of a jab at Cramer picked 4 random tech stocks as potential good investments (not necessarily good tech or good place to work at) but you are now using it to pick unicorns so are you looking at next FANG stocks or unicorns or places to work?

Instacart USxT18 Oct 31, 2018

Personally, stripe, coinbase, instacart, snowflake, opendoor and flexport have tremendous growth potential.

Amazon thrufly OP Oct 31, 2018

What’s it like working at instacart? 1 yr+ after WFM acquisition, do you feel like there are concerns around how else to grow?

Amazon thrufly OP Oct 31, 2018

I’m so sorry Free$$$. its so easy so I can’t resist but ask: is that why you went Nextdoor? 😆 In all seriousness I do agree with liquidity risks that opendoor business model poses (implied in your comment)

Salesforce who date Oct 31, 2018

Stripe seems solid. Salesforce doesn’t value engineering enough. Too many retired in place senior engineers and non technical managers. Salesforce tech and product is maintenance and marketing with innovation coming through acquisitions.

Amazon thrufly OP Oct 31, 2018

From the outside, Salesforce does seem that way. But wondering if Salesforce can more aggressively target traditionally Oracle, Msft and SAP-heavy markets. Having been exposed to multiple salesforce-acquired software I’m curious about “synergetic” growth it can achieve by offering a wider suite of solutions in the enterprise market (I think using the word synergetic is actually appropriate in this case). Salesforce’s venture arm seems to have its money in quite a few promising companies, too!

And yes... super impressed by Stripe’s team.

Why would you say Lyft but not Uber? Uber is bigger and better in every way except reputation.

Amazon thrufly OP Oct 31, 2018

For what its worth, have primary data on lyft via interviews. To your point, reputation and info from media are all that I know of Uber, which isn’t much to formulate any strong opinions on the company. I also mentioned Lyft bc its valuation was disproportionately smaller than Uber relative to revenues, so I’m thinking potentially faster rate of growth.

You can't really compare revenues because they're both in growth mode right now. Uber has higher market share in every place they're competing, and is also in more places around the world as well as more lines of business. Because of that I think Lyft is overvalued in comparison to Uber.

I like this topic. To me the next FANG quality companies would have the potential to disrupt an industry or create an entire new industry. I don't have specific company names, but industries that are poised for disruption are healthcare and real estate. So much inefficiency in those 2 industries imho. Alot of tech companies have entered those spaces recently but nothing wowing yet.

Amazon thrufly OP Nov 1, 2018

How about Airbnb, WeWork, Opendoor and Zillow (with their new strategy) for real estate? I know Airbnb is more travel right now, but they must know a thing or two about how to become a successful leasing business. “Everyday should be an experience worth living. Airbnb apartments”. For healthcare privacy, regulation and legacy systems are huge blockers... so I agree with you. Most FAANG-like companies are likely working on healthcare projects and they certainly have clout (read money bag 💰 in this case) to start learning about it. Aws healthcare cloud, google brain, even Apple Watch are a few that come to mind. If successful, current generation of these mega tech companies may continue to reign for yet another decade+.

Yes, each of those industried has its own challenges. The problem with having big companies branching off to disrupt another industry is that they will do a half ass work like how Google has been doing with many of its business lines: fiber internet, cell phone plans, google health, etc... They don't have focus and do-or-die mentality in those business lines. So with their deep pockets, most likely they will try to acquire potential disrupters. But that also means the fate of such FANG-quality companies would be in question as well after acquisition.
