My situation: - 6 years of work experience - 2 years at Google - Masters degree in machine learning from top 10 school (4.0 GPA) - No published papers - age = mid 20s What are my chances of getting accepted to top tier PhD program? Follow up: what could I do to increase my chances of getting accepted? TC 250K
How are you in your mid 20s with 6 years of work experience? You finished your master’s at age 20?
Graduated from undergrad at age 20 and did masters degree part time while working
I get it if u really want a teaching job, which will definitely be a pay cut. I don’t think u will benefit if u want to return to FANG, also with a TC of 250k, a 5yrs in a PhD program will cost you 1.25M+, very hard to justify ROI
People who do PhD are not mad about money !
There is something in this world called Return on investment. The return can be monetary or non But at the end the return has to justify the investment
Unless you really like to do research in academia - why not find a research position in industry, like Uber AI, Google brain, etc. Dont go to grad school just for the degree.
It's hard to get a research scientist position in industry without a PhD.
You need to make sure you get good recommendations and try to get an “in” with a professor at the schools of your choice. Phd admissions is different from regular college admissions in that they’re not judged by some committee or panel. Make sure you cater your essays towards each professor you’re looking to work under. I went through this a few years ago, have phd from northwestern
You need extremely strong letters from well known faculty describing research ability. Otherwise almost zero chance. I went through this process two years back but decided to come here instead, kind of regret it.
Get references from your architects and tech leads who have PhDs. Connect with research teams in your preferred university. Once they like you and refer you, admissions committee mostly approves. Apps become a formality to document the same interests that you showed to the research team.
A PhD is fun even if not financially optimal. Even if after you graduate you don't get a job that pays you as much as if you have just stayed in industry, odds are that you will get a job that is more fun in a more interesting team thanks to the domain knowledge you will get. * This is only true if you get your PhD from a prestigious program. Unfortunately, people that value PhDs tend to be elitist. If your program is not top 20 don't even bother. Bad financial decision and it will not even help you get into cool teams . You can also go to academia and work on whatever you want. Don't get me wrong , you will have to teach, write grants to get funding, do academic service, department service , etc. With regards to improving your chances. Why don't you reach out to a professor you worked with. Maybe there is a research project that you could moonlight and turn into a publication. That would help a lot.
This is some academic bs. PhD is not fun, it's a shit ton of lonely work and extreme stress. You will find it hard to have a personal life, what girl wants to hang out with PhD nerds..
I didn't have a problem getting a girlfriend and a wife. To be honest my dating life improved after I joined. Think about it this way. You get to interact with people in other departments where male to female ratio is not as skewed or actually inverted. You get to meet very smart women, many of them fairly good looking. I believe the odds are better than going on your own in let's say Seattle or Bay area. PhD is not for everyone. 50% leaves without finishing because a lot of professors are jerks. However, if you are passionate and have a decent advisor it can be quite enjoyable. You get a ton of vacation time, travel for conferences, get to meet a lot of people with very diverse backgrounds and interests and live like a students for another 6 years (lots of energy, parties...and yes, piss poor). Again, not for everyone, but for some like me, it can be quite enjoyable.
Which top 10 school offers a masters in ML?
Georgia Tech?
Yeah, Georgia Tech has a masters of CS program with a machine learning specialization track
How do you have no published papers with a MS? For me it was a core requirement and I wasn't in a top tier school.

Why in the world do you want to go to great school a downgrade in almost every way unless you want a teaching job
I’m interested in teaching job or high level research scientist position in the future I also see a decent amount of VPs and Directors at FANG have PhDs from top tier eng schools.
They are VP s and directors inspite of wasting time in grad school. I know many standard phds in Google who are are l5 and l6. Its a different skillset to become VP vs succeed in phd5 program
