I didn't realize consulting firms were on here. Do you have a separate consulting lounge like we have the tech lounge?
Can I be honest? At Goog we generally dislike people from management consulting backgrounds. Too hardened by structure, often coming in at a mid level manager role, I've gone on full on intervention with other team leads with certain consult folks. (Like literally sitting in a circle, and every employee under that manager talking about their struggles with him/her) So the notion of what consultants think about their operations background, and what is actually applied is sort of divorced from reality.
Ouuuuu consultants are on here. It's been a while since I was a consultant (and didn't like it that much either), but it would be nice to see what the lounge looks like
I'm going to speculate that it really depends on the consultant you get. I've heard amazing stories about McKinsey guys who were super crazy sharp, and I've heard of managers kicking the McKinsey teams out because of their simplistic non-relevant suggestions. In my exposure to consulting, it wasn't the company we cared about (except grandstanding for executives) it was the individuals you went after. We asked for specific consultants because we knew they were worth it.
Yea I agree. Clients don't hire 'firms', they hire partner(s) with whom they have relationships with. Everyone else on the team is just support.
I'd be interested in a consulting lounge/topic as well. But to the OP I don't have a good idea of how MBB compares on ops. Our work is usually pretty different. FYI since my tag says "new", I'm in FTI's RX practice.
McKinsey seem to have the best Operational Excellence rep with their 5-Lenses methodology. - Speaking as a recruiter who's insurance and banking clients only want to see ex-McKinsey contractors or those with 5-Lenses experience
McK historically considered best at ops among big 3 but you can get great work out of Accenture or Deloitte for this too. It’s mostly about fit with the team if you’re looking to hire one of them
BCG and AT Kearney are pretty solid in operations.
Really? Any proof/details?
