I have been an victim of the toxic work environment at Amazon. Most of the managers at Amazon dont have the people management skills. I was told to leave the team saying I was underperforming when I independently finished a successful project with almost no bugs in the product. I was asked to leave the company because my H1 was not picked in my last attempt.
Why is this surprising? Everyone knows their work environment sucks. Don’t beleive to recruters, they’ll tell you all sort of lies and draw rossie pictures. Do your own due diligence.
I turned down an offer from amazon a few years ago because I asked HR if they will be able to transfer me and come back if I didn’t get the lottery. They say they wouldn’t.
You are luck they didn’t lie to u
I hate FB but at least they treat their employees right. In such a case they would have sent you to FB London or a remote office in Canada till you could get a Visa.
I was told I will be transferred to remote team and they will bring me back. 2 weeks before they tell that's not possible and reason was I am underperforming. I was like are you serious? Dont give me the reasons for underperformance. I have successfully delivered a project independently. You could have told me this 4 months before and not before 14 days my OPT is expiring.
Holy shit. They just bombed you man. I hope you figure out something and get through this one. This is really insane to leave employees to dry.
Overall I am happy I am out of the company. Since I know I can easily get into good companies.
Where have you decided to go?
Just a hint: It might be you.
Which org? You should call it out, Amazon is big
Everyone was involved in this from higher org. Seems like manager was trying to save his ass and put false acquisitions on me.
Yup call out the org
It's the Alexa org.
Hear similar things about Alexa! Btw this is a systemic problem and will continue since people will throw themselves to work in Amazon due to potential to make money(stock), promise of amazing work or they just dont have other options. SWEs should make a conscious effort to seek out people in their network or linkedin to know more about the team and work culture. Stop negotiating only on TC and in future look at new job on a holistic level.
I tried to reach out to higher management and no one tried to understand my situation, in fact they supported the managers. That's when I lost faith in the company overall. I even reached out to HR to let her know about the treatment and experience I had. Overall they couldn't just throw me out and considering Visa was the perfect time for them. They could have just asked me to leave giving out the reason that your Visa is expiring but they couldn't because they would have them had to answer HR. Taking it out on performance and then forcing me to leave was the worst thing they could do to anyone. Anyways I believe in karma. Karma is a bitch!
That is always the case. Such escalations never go in favor of employee. Move on, learn from this.
Was it a hello world program? Congrats for having almost no bug.
