Why such a big difference in gross salary between US and Europe? TC of 400k (for senior roles) as employees are completely out of question in Europe. Cannot be just taxation and welfare. Then if companies have access to cheaper labor why they do not grow faster than in US? Why European companies do not fight for talent?
US greed
European work ethic. 30 hour work weeks and 10 hours of production.
Not to mention 6 weeks of holiday to start in some e plsces
All the best tech companies are HQâed on west coast. Thatâs where the market for top talent is. Top talent is most productive when it works close with other top talent. Europe is the hinterlands in our business. Live in the hinterlands, get peasant pay.
Thatâs sad. Top place for business â shitty place to live. Nice place to live â shitty for business.
Itâs not the cost of living or the taxes. Itâs the cost of labor. Youâre paid what youâre worth over there. Weâre overpaid here purely because of supply and demand.
I dont think you understand supply and demand
You seemed to have lost the comparison with Europe. Supply and demand is why weâre âoverpaidâ from Europeâs perspective. Not from our market.
Top talent is in Bay Area and top talent attracts more top talent in this crazy feedback loop which caused TC to increase exponentially. There is no top talent feedback loop in Europe. India TC has also increased 10x in last 15 years due to the talent in Bangalore for example at the top tier companies. A 3-10laks TC was good 15 years back. Now lot of them make 30-100 laks.
This. Don't tell that to the H1B haters though. They think it is also about saving wages.
europe is a bureaucratic clusterfuck, things could never move there at silicon valley pace. so glad I got out
Maybe its because they have healthcare that they don't have to pay an arm and a leg for...đ¤Łđ¤đ
Or maybe they pay with the salary gap... compared to employees here who pay way less for healthcare
Impressive that for such a fundamental difference there is no consensus and clear answers The holiday for example is bs - even if some countries offer 6 weeks, that could not account for 4x and more difference in salary I was talking to a friend just yesterday and he showed me an email from Facebook hr in London who declined to continue the interview process cause they couldnt match his salary in Asia (150-200k USD) Interestingly he said that some European startups were willing to pay that much. I was surprised. Maybe the clustering and loop effect of stealing each other's top talent has an impact. The work ethic: I work long hours everywhere I am but I know many people who value a lot the ability to switch off at 6pm in Europe On the other hand people at Amazon UK clearly don't go home at 6 Surprised that there is no research on this does everyone work long hours in the US? I doubt it.
If you google for some comparison in productivity Europe vs US you find a lot of info but does not apply to the tech jobs specifically. The huge difference in salary is mostly in tech jobs, banking and executives, I believe. Would like to read some statistics about it but did not find.
The one thing that really surprises me is that the market laws we all hold dear don't seem to apply. In a normal market enough Europeans willing to leave their mummy would move to US to make talent in Europe scarce enough until salaries on the two sides of the pond roughly even out. Instead the difference between Europe and US (plus Asia I argue) are massive. Now the clustering argument: it has potential but how does that explain very high salaries in cities like Bangkok or Singapore? I argue Berlin or London have way more concentration of talent than Asian cities. So again clustering is not the full story. Either we are not as smart as we believe in this forum or there is an economic Noble waiting to be won here somewhere.
It is very hard to fire someone in Europe.
People can work as contractors as well. In that way the contract can be terminated with one-three months period. No strings attached. Yet the hourly rate (though higher than for an employee) cannot match TC in US
Itâs hard to find skill set in Europe. Also itâs more cheaper to get labor in India then Europe with better skill set. Hence, no one is interested in Europe.
