Hi guys, I have an interview coming up with Amazon for a UX designer role. I’ve never been to interviews that last for a whole day, so I’m wondering what usually happens there, and if you have tips on how to ace it, it would also be much appreciated! Thanks!
I'm sure you know this already, but I know there is likely going to be a portfolio critique, 1:1s with designers, PMs, and engineers you'd be working with, and a design challenge. All those + lunch usually take up about the day
I just went through a loop with Amazon, and your recruiter should give you a schedule with all the folks you will be talking to. My day started with an hour for a portfolio presentation (2 projects 20 min each + 10 min of Q&A), than 1:1s with members of the team. I did one with a Dev, another one with another designer, lunch with a team member, 1 with a "bar raiser" these are folks at Amazon who you won't be working with but who get to vote if you're better than 50% of the existing people I'm the job you're applying for, then another 1:1 with the hiring manager, then a white boarding exercise. It's a long day so be hydrated, eat a good breakfast, and sleep well the night before.
Wow thanks a lot, this is really helpful!
Lunch is not considered part of the interview so feel free to keep it casual. Be sure to study and have excellent examples for each leadership principle. Ask recruiter for relevant ones.
I thought I would give an update: I didn’t get the job 😂 but it was still a good experience. What I struggled with was the whiteboarding session, there were a lot of use cases and was very different than the online challenges I practiced for. Other than that, lots of situational questions, think about how you reacted in the past when you weren’t able to meet deadlines, how you handled interpersonal conflicts, how you reacted when people disagree with you or you disagree with others, good luck!
Hey! I’ve an upcoming virtual on-site as well. Do you mind sharing what kind of whiteboard challenge did you get?
