Uber Eng Offer

I don’t know what’s going on with uber. Currently senior engineer at google. (Ignore my company setting)

Uber is expecting me join with a big pay cut. Instead of actually working on the numbers to make it competitive. They just send multiple directors talking to me and trying to convince me. Is this the standard process? I feel like it’s such a waste of time. Do they seriously believe people will take a pay cut to join a company especially after all the drama last year!

Plus no 401k Match.
You have to pay for your health insurance.

***From HR. Apparently uber has a new comp policies that everyone in the company should receive very similar pay. The bands are very tight and the performance only matter to a very small extent. Way to go Uber.

All I can say is that I wish I could share with you what I know. This is the first company where I will stay past four years (I’m aiming for 6, maybe 7 years, depending on how things evolve).

All I can share is that you shouldn’t think of Uber as a ridesharing company only. I’ll leave it at. That should be enough for anyone looking at the entire business to guess where Uber is headed.

I guess you are talking about food delivery and Uber Eats. Does Lyft compete with Uber in food delivery?
      Jan 24, 2018
    • Uber / Eng mvcguj
Eats, Freight, ATG cars and trucks, municipal services, stadium services, uber for business, etc. And that’s just what is public if you actually cut through the SJW media noise and find articles talking about the business itself.

Lyft only does rideshare and is only in the US and one Canadian city. It’s apples and oranges. Lyft is a ridesharing company. Uber is a last-mile logistics platform.

Yeah. Then recruiter camp back with like 10k more in total comp, including both stock and base. I was like whaaaaat. Maybe I am overpaid now. I thought uber was generous on stocks at least

Having recently been through the process. They were low on cash initially but after a few rounds of negotiation came to a reasonable number. I just stuck to my guns about what I am worth.

They pushed past the comp level for my new position. But I got them to come around by reminding them what my package was like now. Didn’t end up with a pay cut at the end. From time of offer to now their valuation they based my offer on has gone up. So my equity package is already worth more than when I signed. Thanks SoftBank!

How is this possible... Softbank deal .... Either it is a flat or down round depending on if you take the tender offer into consideration...

I don’t mind them calling. But the numbers need to be there and the calling will be a bonus. I can love uber to the bones but I am never taking a pay cut (total comp cut plus not liquid) to join a pre-ipo over valued company.

Uber is usually in the business of quantity over quality when it comes to hiring. Good luck

I work with a lot of Uber PMs and the bar is definitely not high. Just a bunch of bullshiters who talk shit all day. Lots of them hired from Google.

I like your analysis. The one thing you’re forgetting is the risk of these 150k to go down. Before or after the IPO.

Google might not do 3x but it won’t crash. Uber might, just like any young company at a hyper competitive market.

This is valid concern, particularly at the time big tech is growing faster than small just IPO’ed. companies. Except Roku, I don’t find success story of IPO amongst tech recently. MongoDb, Cloudera, mule soft, nuatanix etc all have not grown much. Even Redfin after stellar debut fell hard though still higher than IPO price.

I am very confused. With SoftBank deals. Their validation dropped from 69B to 49B how could your package went up?

They bought some equity at a discount then purchased more at a 70B valuation. My package was based on a 62B valuation.

Uber was already valued at $69B. They bought preferred stock at $70B and common stock at $48B. What type of stock is yours?

That was exactly my experience. Lowballed me on their offer and had people calling me everyday to tell me it’s all good. I was super impressed by the engineering team at uber, but combination of super low offer plus people calling turned me away.
