Uber for an ML position, SF.
Base: 150K
Cash Bonus: 15K (March 2020, based on performance - can be 2x)
RSUs: 330K (1/4th for end of 1st year, rest vested monthly for 4 years)
No sign-on bonus and no relocation bonus (they will relocate me but not pay instead)

Waiting on Google details....but it's L3 (will not budge) and might not be ML. Will update the post once I have details.

Current TC: $165.
YOE: 2 years
Worked on ML projects so far workwise and in college.

Questions:
1) Is Uber offering less? What can I negotiate on?
2) Which would you choose? (answer the poll)

It really depends on what team you get at Google, once you know that blinders can help you more. Also what team at Uber?

It's an ML team under marketplace. Work seems interesting. Talking to teams at Google, but right now work at Uber seems more interesting than the teams I spoke to at Google so far. Your thoughts? I am considering switching internally at Google.

ooo I was also offered marketplace, but I have heard pretty bad things about it in terms of wlb

I'll definitely update once I get a team match. And eventually with offer details.

I was able to get a team match at Google with a team in Google Brain. Tensorflow Lite team. Lot of experienced engineers, but I'm not sure if I'll be doing actual ML or infra work. But I will do some ML optimization. Any thoughts? L3

You should find out number of RSUs they offered you.

Rec said it'll be a total value estimate. Do they give the exact number of RSUs in the final offer?

Yes you should find out number of RSUs. The stock valuation change and I know for the fact that recent 409A is higher than what it used to be

Thank you! Shall do that. How long did Uber wait for you to decide? I've made them wait 2 weeks already and I have a deadline.

Uber played it sly with me, they told me that once they give me a written offer that I'd have 2 business days to accept. They knew I was in the process with Google and nowadays Google requires written proof of counter offers. So they didn't give me anything in writing till google made their offer. I just gained my Google recruiters trust enough to have them believe my offer numbers even without a written counter offer.

Have you told them you're in the process with other companies and want to make the best decision for your career?

Emailing that right now. And I'm asking for more time. Yeah I got the same thing 'written and then you got a tight deadline' 😐

      What's good for L4 then?

160 base 400-450k stocks. I wouldn’t sign up for Uber if anything less. Note that google, fb or Linkedin might be a lot lesser in equity like 350k ish.

They are stable so it makes sense. There's no room for negotiation (Uber's policy) but I'll try.

Can you help me with the type of questions at Uber for ML? Is this a scientist position by any chance? Also DM’d you.

ML engineer. I specifically applied for this. It's machine learning but with an emphasis on productionizing it. I like that :) after 12 ML courses in grad school I realized that until you build it end to end, you don't learn anything.

Coding: parsing xml to a tree and doing some operations on it
      (Do some leetcode I guess)
Ml: help drivers find best spots in town for picks ups with a dataset, I got my laptop with a conda env setup and did this in a jupyter notebook. Used kmeans.
System design: Build Instagram (watched a ton of YouTube videos on system design that helped)
      Manager rounds that involved talking....
