Looks like Uber is cutting 400 marketing jobs. More to come? Curious if they'll start cutting tech costs. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/29/technology/uber-job-cuts.html
Time to take a lyft
Lol, I have close insider in Lyft and things are way worse
Damnit I have an interview coming up soon with Uber. Is it even worth it?
I mean PMs marketing middle management and everyone else gets laid off before engineers
Thats nothing. Standby for Cisco's upcoming layoff announcement.
Is there a layoff in cisco?
Cisco had a massive 5000 person layoff a few years ago. When that company does layoffs, it’s usually in the thousands :/
That’s natural. They don’t need so many marketing people now as Uber has already achieved global market dominance.
They hired me for a tech job, then their “priorities shifted” a week later and the position closed
There were 400 people doing marketing at Uber? 😂
They have more than 400 Marketing employees?! Wtf
That's what I was surprised at as well
Uber marketing is quite complicated. A lot of different regulations different areas they need to overcome to grow at. Each area - plenty specifics like “we need all drivers to be licensed”, “we put quote on ride sharing”, “those areas are excluded”, also taxi strikes all over the place. I assume they decided indeed to optimize the dep and slow down the expansion - growing up, not out.
This is sad and disheartening. It hasn’t even been 6 months since the company IPO’d and they’re already cutting people loose. I don’t think tech roles will be cut down - since there are no services in tech that Uber wants to get rid of yet. But only time will tell.
Could be worse. They could have been cut loose just before the IPO.
They don't have to get rid of services that are already developed and just need maintaining. It's cruel but that's now Silicon Valley works. So make sure you save money and be ready for everything. Especially now - economy feels great but I'm not so sure about it.
