Which would you choose if they had similar TC? I feel like personal growth would be higher at Uber but ATG is falling apart so I'm not sure about their future as a company...
ATG is not falling apart
Thanks for your input. From an outsider's perspective, it seems like it's going to be harder for Uber to test its cars compared to its competitors given the recent developments. And it seems like morale is low which means that attracting and retaining engineers working on the product would be hard as well. Do you have any insight on this?
I think you need to evaluate what you want to do, reading something like designing you life may help. Because regarding the challenge, ATG just received a new constraint to work with, which will make the work more challenging and the team committed to build with higher standards of safety. Which will likely change how they work, deploy and collaborate. What happened to the self vehicle car was a tragedy, but one that will probably happen with other self driving vehicles once they start to scale, I think the analogy is: when a Boeing airplane falls down, it’s the worst thing in the world, but the team doesn’t step down, they continue to work towards a safer future, where people can enjoy seamless travel and they learn from their mistakes so that it is less likely to happen in the future. A lot of people here are trying to advise you on what to do, but they’re may be thinking what would they do if they were you. Perhaps what you need is counseling instead, which will help nurture what you think is best for you, from your point of view, not others’. Edit: clarity
Hiring bar is most important so Uber.
Which role is working on more interesting problems?
I would say they are both equally interesting with maybe a slight preference to Amazon.
Highest amount of VC and company funds are put into AV... ATG won't fall apart until and unless VCs loss the interest in the technology..
And Uber..... lol AV funding is a joke. In a few yearsn VC will feel even greater pain seeing how much of the funding have gone to waste. You can’t compete with Google when it comes to AV.
In the near future, "falling apart" is unlikely. Even if the company goes under in the long term, in the meantime, you'll learn a lot and work with awesome people. I'd start by focusing more on me, unless you are being recruited at a very high level (unlikely if you are posting here :D). Finally, if you are in the company, you get to shape it's fate :)
Good point. You are right that I am not being recruited at a high level.
ATG will not fall apart, and with mobility as a platform ATG is not make or break for Uber’s future
I was in a similar situation few weeks back. I would have chose Uber if these were the only two options.
Uber
