Uncontested divorce

Spouse asked me to print out a divorce form, says wants uncontested divorce, and says we don't need a lawyer. Good idea or shiuld I get a lawyer? He doesn't want my money, I don't need his.

Who has more money? Kids involved? Shared property?

Microsoft lopiko OP Apr 20, 2018

Me. No kids. No shared property but I have a house

Get a mediator. They are not are expensive and one can inform you of your rights. Since most states are communal property states, your money is combined, there is no “her money” or “his money.”

Unless they have a prenup agreement.

Sorry to hear that OP. Looks like you both are accepting the facts and being mature about it. Agreed with AMD. Mediator is the best option. Start there.

I went through an uncontested divorce in Washington state where i think you may be. Both of us were financially secure, we trusted each other not to be assholes, and we knew what we each wanted and thought it was reasonable. We wrote up between the two of us an agreement that just stated what stuff was clearly hers, clearly mine, included language that any account with only one person’s name on it was theirs and not community, and language that she could have anything else from the house that she wanted until a particular date, after which it became mine. We then had to appear in front of a judge who asked us if we were ok with it. We said yes and he approved it. No kids, easy to understand assets, most assets were clearly labeled one or the other. For something more complicated, or where one party is being an asshole, get a lawyer or mediator.
