How well do unlimited vacation policies actually work out? Does your vacation get micro managed? Looking for data not anecdotes.
Hate it
I didn’t use much in earlier years after just join. Didn’t want to look lazy. Then after a while I take when I need. It is good not having to worry about quota.
I don’t like it. When I take 1-2 weeks off, I feel like I’m asking for a favor. Maybe it is all in my mind. When I had 3 weeks vacation, o felt it my right and not a favor.
Pretty bad. In limited vacation, if you do not use up your vacation you will be paid when you leave. This is not the case in case of unlimited vacation. In my case, I was generally taking < 2 weeks vacation per year when in unlimited vacation mode. This was influenced by my manager who would make me feel bad if I requested for vacation. Actually if was his ploy to force me to take less vacations.
It’s a trap. You won’t get it When you really need it
True that.
At my previous company, they promoted work life balance along with unlimited vacation and it turned out well; I took average 3.5 weeks off per year.
I used to have it and miss it, I would take month long vacations and many off days here and there
I love it. I’ve been able to take many more vacation days than I otherwise would have been entitled to. The key for me has been not treating things any differently as I would regular PTO, like tracking the number of days I’ve used or plan to use and scheduling time off in advance.
I took up to 3 months off total in one year when I had this perk. I miss it. It allowed me to travel quite a bit during those years.
which company allowed this?
I have had unlimited PTO before. It is a good thing and a bad thing. I felt like I could take individual days off when I needed to. When I wanted to take 2 week vacations I never had a problem getting it approved. On the flip side I felt like I had to work extra to justify (maybe just to myself) that I deserved the time off that I was taking.
