Noticed that I have VNC server working in service mode on my laptop. I was wondering what my company can see, and whether they need my permission to view my screen at any time? Would I be notified if someone is viewing my screen for example? How would I know when someone is accessing my company laptop? Just in case you are wondering, yes, I do send personal emails using my personal email during work hours, including some related to job hunting! Thanks!
It’s a way for IT to get into your computer if they wanted. Afaik, vnc allows them to install other service (for spying if they liked) or read your hdd. They can disable all notifications
But. Can they view my screen using VNC viewer without directly allowing access ? Couldn’t figure that out from VNCs website.
My laptop runs a process signed by an internal certificate that can run any code at any time as an administrator. I never do anything personal on my work laptop ever. The company laptop is company property. You have no expectation of privacy on that hardware.
What do you expect from a company laptop? Buy a personal one and you can do whatever you want.
Assume they see everything. Very easy to install screen capture technology, similar to what gamers use to record their gaming sessions. Odds are they DON'T, just because you're probably not that interesting and people have better things to do than spend all day watching other people's monitors. But if for some reason you became interesting, ie, the target of some internal investigation, then they certainly could see anything they wanted. So don't do anything on your company laptop you wouldn't feel comfortable discussing with HR.
I used to think “odds are” since can you imagine sifting through all that data? But these days with deep leaning all that data is easy to sift through and classify.
Sure, so one way you "become interesting" is some algorithm identifies a pattern that raises a red flag and that causes somebody to install the screen capture software on your laptop to see what you're actually doing. So again, don't do anything on your company laptop that you would not feel comfortable discussing with HR. I do some personal stuff, I do my banking, pay my bills, check out some stuff on social media, read the news. I don't mind discussing any of that with HR. I do the stuff I don't want to discuss with HR on my phone, like blind, tinder/dating, chatting with friends, etc Porn is an interesting topic. Amazon's policy forbids displaying or sharing sexual material at work but explicitly allows personal use that doesn't interfere with job performance and is silent on watching porn at home. So it would boil down to whether you are comfortable discussing your taste in porn with your HR business partner. It's not a volation of company policy so long as you do it privately and outside the office, but it sure could be embarrassing.
This is settled case law in the US. Your employer can monitor communications on their network or equipment.
Job hunt emails should be done on your phone or at home on personal laptop...
I agree, although, If I don’t want to stay, its a win win situation for the employer and the employee, the faster I’m out the better for them no?
Do you work at a startup or something?
No, I’m a finance/accounting guy at a non tech company.
