Vanguard target date retirement fund vs select your own

Vanguard target date retirement fund has an expense ratio of 0.05 and vtiax total international stocks had an expense ratio of 0.11. Isn’t the latter expensive? Target date fun d includes this so why do people buy individual funds rather than target date? Aside from being able to control the breakdown? Im fine with the portfolio of target date funds in my case. If I were making it myself maybe I wouldn’t include bonds and just have cds or some high interest saving account instead. Is there something I’m missing?

I put all my 401k in a vanguard target date retirement fund then the rest in WealthFront IRA and Taxable account.

I don't like them have bonds inside. Rates going up and a lot of potentially corporate crap bonds. On the other hand I'm fine with individual bonds I select myself to could keep till maturity.

How do you filter out bonds for your portfolio selection . Any links or filter would be helpful

I put bonds in traditional 401k accounts and equities in Roth and taxable accounts so for me it doesn't make sense to have one fund that contains both bonds and equities.
