Visiting South Lake Tahoe

I'm planning to visit South Lake Tahoe this weekend if there is no snow storm warning. Is there a possibility I will need snow chains at this time of the year? If there is, I may not go. Please share your experience if you have visited in the past few weeks.

Thanks.

Definitely a good strategy, chains are a pain in the ass, good to rent a 4x4 for the weekend if you don’t have one and are really serious

Rentals don't let you put chains and don't come with snow tires so if it happens to snow hard you will be out of luck

You don’t need chains on a 4x4 car

Depends how bad the snow is. Chain control has different levels. You need snow tires and 4x4 and still need chains in the car.

If your have awd/4wd and severe weather tires you don't need chains.

There is a level beyond 4wd where they can require 4wd and chains. I think that's the step right before road closure.

I believe they’ll shut the road down before it gets to the 4x4 with chains level.

You wouldn’t need chains unless you are going when it is snowing

Just buy chains, they're like $40 one time

Well, you need chains right now. More snow tomorrow but if you are going up Fri night or later should be totally fine.
