Walmart labs vs Twitter

I got an offer from Walmart labs' Search Personalization team and Twitter's Real Time Compute team which works on the real time streaming engine Heron and a Interactive SQL engine based on Presto. I have 6 years of experience but worked as an embedded SW engineer for the first 5 years and pivoted my career to backend SW for the last 1 year. Which company should I choose considering the factors below ? a. future prospects b. career growth c. scope for learning d. work culture e. compensation

Twitter for better brand

What’s Tc and level

Microsoft Sam4444 OP Jan 9, 2019

Still in talks about the compensation. Walmart is offering senior software engineer whose average TC seems to be 190 - 200K per year from sources online. Twitter might offer me Software engineer 1 because of my lack of experience in distributed Systems but manager promised that I could get promoted to SE-2 6months depending on my performance. Looks like a lower level in Twitter might match or beat Walmart's slightly senior role.

Twitter swe2 tc is much more than 200.

I also have an on-site pending with Infrastucture engg at Lyft but never gave too much thought to it after getting a couple of positive feedback. Do you recommend giving an interview with Lyft ? How do you look at opportunities in Lyft vs Twitter without bringing the impending IPO into the picture ?

Don't know abt this team in twitter but walmart labs search team recently hired too many people with zero background in search. If u are lucky then u might land in good sub team inside search. Another point worth considering is that search is very specialized field so u should join only if it's top class because later u will get good opportunities in this field only if u r very good

I also got a vibe from the recruiter that they are in a hiring spree since last year. Your point regarding opportunities in search is a good one. I am inclined towards Twitter for the same reason.

Search encompasses lot of infrastructure related projects . The experience gained working for search in transferable to any large scale product. Check out where people who used to work at search have landed.

Twitter because of better brand

Go for Twitter. You will learn a lot there. I would not optimize for meaningless titles and slightly above comp. think long term and come to WalmartLabs at much higher level.

Definitely not Walmart search. Walmart search is a dumpster fire. It's a mess of epic proportions.

Walmart.com rand.randm Jan 10, 2019

You seem to hate search a lot :-). Any beef with the team?

Walmart.com lore Jan 15, 2019

It's a fact! You can get all the assortment in the world but Walmart search would only show a select few. That thing is broken to the core.

You can always switch team inside the company. I am surprised they gave you sw1. You are not straight out if the college. Ppl started out if college got promoted to sw2 in a year or so. I would suggest keep interviewing and find place where they will value you more. Or, if you need job right away, accept either offer and keep interviewing till you find good offer and interesting project. I have interacted with heron team several times. They all very nice people and good engineers.

Can you please me the average timeline Twitter responds after interviews? Especially after phone interview with hiring manager?
