I did it. I chased the dream. I took the leap. I parted from a well paying and completely unfulfilling career job and accepted an offer from a small and very young business specializing in the vogue and trendy electric vehicle charging solutions boom. The founder was a thought leader in the space, executing his vision flawlessly and well funded. Not many years later the funding evaporated into space and the majority of the company was executed with a big boom of layoffs. I am 50 years old. Confidence quickly waning as I have not been able to secure a well paying completely unfilling offer. I know I am not the first with this story and hoping those that can relate to this situation would kindly bestow guidance and sage wisdom.
50? Shit, you should be retired
That’s what you think when you are 30.
not the guidance and wisdom I was anticipating.
Consulting.
Hang in there, ageism is real in capitalism, but i hope you push through
hate to blame it on that. Though I do recall several times sitting on the other side of the interviewing desk looking at the guy. Clothes just slightly out of date and a resume that looked like a Twitter feed.
Start deleting big chunks from your resume. Just leave the relevant experience. There’s no need to tell them about the job where you wrote software for IBM mainframes on punch cards.
Have you thought about Gov't contracts? best of luck to you. Get you mind together on the confidence piece, meditate, maybe a life coach, exercise. You have a PhD in work experience and that is very valuable. Companies are looking at that more but you do have to have that standout edge..do get your edge together
Ageism is real. However it only means that your income will decline from now on, doesn’t mean it will disappear. I’ve seen people who cane here in their 50s, and made enough to retire comfortably at standard age. Some were in govt jobs, some were in industry. You apply to mid career level jobs, and someone will hire you eventually. It’s just a matter of statistics. Unemployment is still record low
Net worth?
At least you won't have regrets of not trying
Hang in there, is possible to get offers after 50, don’t lose faith, you have experience that maybe some companies need it.
50 isn't that old. You got at least 20 years in you. You gotta find people who see that and remind yourself how much time you have left. That's more than what the FIRE crowd can imagine.
