Spent my entire career in Google and Facebook. Made to E6. Wondering what’s next. Currently making ~700k TC working ~50 hours a week. Don’t want to sacrifice either comp or life.

Where would you go?

    • Hire smart people and let them run the company. Do you think Gates/Zuckerberg have sacrificed their life?

Yep they did. They had very little work life balance

      *they have very little...

It was intentionally past tense because he was indicating that startup life was easy and paid a lot

Lol HotBlonde has obviously never owned a startup before. Very draining, stressful, and rarely rewarding (9/10 startups fail)

Hmm, Does NFLX pay in that league for a L6?
      May 5, 2018
    • Netflix fs92
It's "personal top of market" so the short answer is "maybe." We don't have salary bands or caps.

      Does NFLX allow remote SRE?
      May 5, 2018
    • Netflix fs92
Very few remote positions. As far as I know the SRE team does not do remote.

@fs92 What does personal top of market mean. Say if I can find two companies in the valley that are willing to pay me higher. Is that my personal top of market and NFLX would match that?
      May 5, 2018
    • Netflix fs92
Yes, it means more than anyone else would pay you, specifically, for comparable work. You're encouraged to go out and do your own market research (I.e. get offers) to help your manager gauge that.

    • Mesosphere onsie
Hmm, right. This is certainly true when we are talking comp for engineers in the range of $300k-500k. Not in the staff engineer range. This is based on my own exp and the offer that nflx has been giving to folks around me.

Honestly, what you are asking for is impossible. No one besides F/B will pay someone in a non stressful role $700K. That’s why so many people never leave F/B.

Have been at g for 7 years. Sold a couple of stocks in all these years (maybe worth $70). Base salary is $150. My manager made it sound like that's the normal pay. Work at HQ

Sorry Man, i feel you. When I first joined Blind I learned how my pay is way below market. But over the 2 years i feel like my boss knew this and is trying to silently fix it. Over that period my pay has gone up by 50k

Is your mortgage paid off and such? If so, why not join a Series A start-up? It's not as risky as a new startup and it's still early stage. You probably know a lot of quality people by now having worked in G+FB. So you might have good leads into promising startups.

    • Mesosphere onsie
I doubt the work life balance requirement would fit into working at a startup.
      May 5, 2018
    • New / Eng RhpJ71
Depends on the startup. You don't have to do beyond 50 hours/week in a well funded startup.
      May 5, 2018
    • Mesosphere onsie
At most well funded ones the risk/reward ratio might not even justify making the move when OP is already well established and making $700k/year.
      May 5, 2018
    • New / Eng RhpJ71
There are 1 or 2 startups in a year where everything lines up: timing, market, tech, team, investors, etc. If you are G+FB alumnus these should be within reach. Of course, the risk is never out of the picture, but you'd have the rewards too.
