I know couple of people were interviewing there, and I heard Uber ATG and AI labs are going through makor re-orgs and are things are fuzzy and not good.

Con anyone provide any info, and if it makes sense to join them now.

Thanks.

For ATG I would avoid with the latest exodus. All the good people left and I heard Leadership is a complete shit show there. AI Labs is a bit more mature but still trying to find footing. Similar to Facebook AI org

Thanks for the heads up, just curious, do you know where good Uber ATG people went?

Bunch of Start ups like Ike, Kodiak, Argo, and Aurora. Also bunch went to Uber HQ.

Can Uber keep the current valuation or get a higher valuation without ATG?

The value of ATG alone is at most 4 billion.

But I thought the whole point of Uber being so highly valued is because some day they will us autonomous fleets and keep most of the profits to themselves

Cruis is valued around 15b if I'm right, I won't be surprized if ATG is valued one third. Uber is valued so high due to their market share/revenue stream in ride hailng/sharing, their monopoly on international market (before Lyft gets there), and expectation of their expansion in everything logistics, such as airlines (given their ceo), food delivery, etc.

But isn’t ride share unprofitable without autonomous vehicles? The shitty thing about this nature of business is that it’s highly localized. You can win in one city but lose in another. You might win dominance in NYC but lose Portland to another service

That’s an interesting point about airlines. I’m hoping that it happens but that would prolly take a LONG time before Uber gets in to there

I think Dara's long term vision is to turn Uber to everything logistics company. Their survival and profitability cannot only depend on autonomous driving. Google is so much ahead of them in AV and they could easily write an app like Uber's for ride-hailing and eliminate Uber given how much they know about every user, and google map, and waze. I'm not saying Google will do that, there might be more profitable areas for them, but Uber cannot depend on ride-hailig and ride-sharing profit using AV. At least no sane CEO would do that.

If google tried to take that approach it would prolly end up closer to a Google+ feature (although prolly better cuz of pricing), because google culture is not super conducive to sustaining huge mass consumer new lines of products. I think Uber gave 5% of the company to settle for Waymo, right? So if anything, my guess is that google might build a fleet and offer it as a platform for ride sharing companies (like GCP)

Interesting. Yeah we see that with Uber Freight. I’m guessing maybe even soon you get scooter deliveries too? And maybe Uber Drone deliveries? Airline would be REALLY interesting. Now THATS one industry that could be huge, but that’s like betting AirBnB will gain significant share from hotel and real estate markets. I hope 🤞 both happens, but it feels like that’s really hard to do if Uber goes public (investors might be a lot more short term focused).

How long do you think that will take, and do you think that’s a significant part of the IPO prospectus?

Still tons of motivated people working on challenging projects. Larger pool of Blind whiners per capita tho.

ATG has lost the truck unit but the rest of the organization is much better than before. The people who went to HQ are mostly casual damaged cause by leadership movement.

How is Uber ATG's progress and tech relative to Waymo? Is it the second best after them?
      Nov 26, 2018

It’s good progress overall. It needs more time and engineering work to catch up with Waymo as it’s a system engineering work overall. In terms of scalability ATG is definitely on the leader side along with a few others.

There are public lists on how far companies are in the game based on certain measures like number of miles without human intervention. Uber is so behind that is not even in the least. Waymo has an order of magnitude lead compared to others, second is Cruise.

Those metrics are very up to whatever different company defines. You could come up with your own definition and release your numbers. You will be very surprised when you compare the numbers with the real fleet.
