What now?

I’m one of those hungry people who needs to keep rising. I don’t foresee myself as a middle manager or deep in the engineering world. I see myself in leadership. I’ve been a SWE for 5 years at msft and another big company and I’ve even working for the past year as a Partner Engineer at Facebook.

What now? I could feasibly go into Product Management, back to SWE (which I am NOT excited to do), or something else completely TBD! Exciting times, would like to hear about potential career path choices from here on out.

The goal is to continue saving up money and moving into roles which will eventually get me into much higher paying TC and C-suite positions.

This guy doesn’t want to be a swe nor a middle manager. He wants to skip all that and jump to being a CEO or vp.

Yeah, good luck. You must be special.

4Sed are you bitter about something because it sure sounds like it
      (8) This is something I was thinking about. What is MBB consulting by the way?

McKinsey, BCG, Bain. Basically the FAANG in management consulting. You'll need MBA. Entry level after MBA pays under $200k, so depending on your situation you may be taking a pay cut. They are also up or out. Like Facebook/Amazon but worse. Promotion every 2 years till you tap out.

I am not bitter. I am just awestruck to your entitled idea. The real world has no shortcuts. And you are looking for one because you feel you are special.

99% chance you will fail if you go down that route. Qualified people know how to detect posers.

You become leader by being a soldier first. Nobody becomes a general by doing an mba. You be a soldier first walk up the chain. The only other way is if it’s your dads company.

4sed Well that definitely confirmed your bitterness. 😂

      (8) The MBA route doesn’t sound like it’s for me and it’s a significant pay cut. This is very interesting though because maybe a change to non-tech companies jumpstarts something in VC or startups.

Bitter at what? You are still a minion in this game. If you were in a position better than me then you could say I am bitter.

I was just trying to bust your fancy bubble, which will bust anyway, sooner or later.

Why not rest and vest? If you're partner engineer you would have at least $5mil in net worth....

Exactly. I used to be at Microsoft and now I’m not. I know that partner is a level at Microsoft. How can you not know that Partner Engineer is a role

It might be easier to figure out your future if you think in terms of what you want to do, instead of focusing so much on what position you want to occupy.

I want to lead and guide company vision. That makes the position clear.

I suppose you could start with VP of eng at a small startup. Once you get leadership experience can jump to cto or ceo at other companies. Starting your own startup is another choice but all these ideas will be a pay cut. Only staying in middle management will keep your current pay or more.

Hmm yeah I may have to sacrifice pay for the right role in leadership. Which gives me reason to save money at a FANG right now!
