I get that Telecom is a second tier industry in terms of pay compared to tech companies, but I do think there is an opportunity here to work on pretty cutting edge tech. Since I am at Verizon what areas should I be learning and looking into to better my future job prospects?
Cutting edge tech? What are we doing that’s cutting edge?
Verizon & Cutting Edge!? LoL
As someone in Telco....not sure cutting edge is how I would describe....too big and regulated
And it depends what area you want to focus on. CRM applications are getting big, Media targeting apps seem real cool
There are plenty of cloud based startups and smaller companies that are a lot more cutting edge and highly paid than VZ. companies like Zoom, Twilio, 8x8, RingCentral.
I've worked for Verizon, CTL, Suddenlink, Frontier and now Spectrum as far as carriers. There's really nothing they do that's cutting edge. However having worked for Dell & Google they are wayyyyyyyy more WLB easy. I just got married am in my late 20s and would rather not work 60hrs a week again....or ever tbh. The pension is great here, pay is ok, benefits are pretty decent....weird being the youngest in the team here (by 30 years) I guess it's up to you, want a high stress but high output job? Go FAANG. If you can save and get out soon enough 100% it's worth it. I didn't save (as the old saying went expenditures rose with income) and wasted a lot, would probably be worse off with student loans... If you want a lower paying, better WLB, family oriented, cruise control job? Telecom or carrier is definitely the way to go. Only downside other than that is my boss wont let me wear shorts and gets pissy if I'm more than 20 minutes late.
I guess but WLB in my opinion is all about team and boss.
That's definitely true. In my experience in the past 2 jobs WLB was way better. Burnout wasn't a thing near as fast either. Dunno about you guys but I remember the days of being in HS and couldn't wait to come home to try this new Heatsink and push my overclock or try this, do that..... Now I hate working with computers, don't feel like learning, feel like coasting to the exit....miss that thing that inspires you! All that to say, the team and more importantly, boss matters 100%. A good boss can make or break a job. I've been more than slightly lucky to have a good and understanding boss the last 2 jobs.....
Not cutting edge as it's mainly redhat, oracle db, java 8, and spring boot. Other teams are using Kafka, Hadoop, etc as they're working with tons of data. Also some Tableau but not much.
What’s your dev stack?
